WWE News & Notes 2/26/08
First things first, WWE has signed a deal with MY NETWORK TV to air Smackdown.
This is horrible.
Why?
Because if you have regular television, not cable, you won't see Smackdown anymore. I know a lot of families down in Los Angeles that will no longer be watching Smackdown thanks to this brilliant move by WWE.
That basically kills off a lot of the Latino's that watch it on the CW or UPN or whatever it's called.
Thanks WWE...Thanks for nothing.
In other news...you know that boxer that is going to wrestle Big Show?
He's getting 20 Million Dollars...according to many sources one of which is Oscar De La Hoya...who recently was glad to see his next opponent getting a lot of media attention in light of the Wrestlemania Showdown.
Speaking of 20 million dollars, did you hear the rumors that claim the Rock is going to show up for the Hall of Fame ceremony, and the more far fetched notion that he'll be at Wrestlemania in person!
I'm not going to say he's going to for sure be there, but he's not exactly one to show up live...maybe on the titan tron...maybe.
More wwe releases happened...just not to guys we care about.
Val Venis is still on the roster? What the heck?
Hbk is going to end Flair's career? Weak.
Raw was lame last night, I can't believe how weak of a wrestlemania it's going to be...my wife wants to throw an old school ppv party at my house...downside...i don't have any friends in my area...but the party is on...so I might get Wrestlemania despite my gripes.

The Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin Dvd
Is this dvd worth it?
Haven’t we already seen Stone Cold dvd’s, vhs, and countless releases?
Yes, but this three disc dvd set is the most complete dvd on the Texas Rattlesnake known as Steve Austin that the WWE has produced. There are a lot of good points on this one and I recommend it highly.
This is not the complete and utter history of Stone Cold, but it is a good enough chunk of his days in WCW, WWE, and even ECW to hold over any diehard Stone Cold Fan.
Is it worth the price?
Yes.
However, if you’re like me, you’ve already seen all that Steve Austin has done. I do recall mentioning that I had 3,000 vhs tapes at one point. It’s all locked away in the memory bank.
My favorite match from Stone Cold is definitely Hart vs. Austin at the Survivor Series 96, which was a technical masterpiece.
If you don’t remember that one, it was where Stone Cold was antagonizing Hart for leaving after losing the title to Shawn Michaels. He antagonized him to the point that at the Series, Hart and Stone Cold would make history.
The feud wouldn’t end there, they battled it out all the way to Wrestlemania 13 where Hart turned Heel and Austin turned face.
Whatever the history is, this is a great set to pick up. Some people will complain about how it’s a little scarce on the WCW histories, but I think it’s worth it. Not everyone can have a massive VHS collection and not everyone really needs to see his feud with Dustin Rhodes or his involvement with some of the Heels in WCW.
Check out The Legacy of Stone Cold on Dvd, and order it from Amazon.com…or pick it up at your local store.

WWE Scrambles To Find Latino’s
One thing about professional wrestling that no one really thinks about is, the huge population of Latino Americans that love Professional Wrestling.
I know, a shocker.
One thing that has been bugging me is how WWE is going to cope with the loss of Rey Mysterio. Like it or not, he’s the cornerstone of the Smackdown brand and the reason why the ratings are so high across the demographic of Spanish speaking wrestling fans.
Some might be quick to say that Batista is going to fill the void, but Batista is not latino.
So what now?
With the burial of Psichosis and Super Crazy, the WWE maybe settling for less with the withdrawal of Mysterio due to injury.
Who can fill the gap?
We all know that there is no way in hell that AAA or CMLL is going to let one of the luchador’s come into the U.S to work a limited routine with the WWE.
Plus the last time the WWE courted a Mexican wrestler, Stephanie McMahon wanted to take his mask off and ground his aerial maneuvers.
So what now?
Well, maybe the better news is not so much that WWE is going to have to elevate some Cruiserweights to replace Mysterio in the main event hunt, but rather the fact that the CW (which is a huge network for minority demographics) isn’t going to renew Smackdown.
That leaves WWE with what?
Not sure.
But one thing is interesting; WWE airs Monday Night Raw on Sundays via Telemundo, the whole thing, which means that Latin American fans are already getting their WWE fix.
But no Smackdown.
That’s ok, since Mysterio is out for a while.

How WWE ruined Wrestlemania Already
Wrestlemania is a great time of year, it’s usually the only time I shell out any money for a live ppv. But this year, it’s ruined. I had high hopes for the ppv following the Royal Rumble results, but right now, I don’t think that I can get behind such a lousy line up for the biggest ppv of the year.
Don’t get me wrong, I still like wrestling, but this event is going to be a disaster on many levels. Here’s how the WWE ruined it so far….
HHH winning the chamber match at No Way Out was fine, I like HHH, I think he’s do for a title shot, despite his always getting title shots in the last few years, I’ll accept that opportunity for him, and was looking forward to something huge.
In the final two of the Rumble it almost seemed that the WWE was teasing HHH vs. John Cena, and that was something worth seeing as both men are different now, and they could put on a show since they are both back from nagging injuries. However, Orton being thrown into the mix now, thanks to a dq ending at No way Out and the announcement to have a triple threat match for the world title at Wrestlemania makes me feel like not getting the ppv now.
The last few wrestlemania main events in my memory all have triple threat main events. I’m sick of seeing this. When are they going to build one on one match ups that have the epic feeling that Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior had at Wrestlemania VI?
So that aside, what else could WWE ruin?
Big Shows return has been foiled by a lame story line. I don’t care about a boxer and the giant storyline. It’s lame. Save Big Show for something more important, not this load of crap.
Mike Tyson showing up in 1998, that was huge. Stone Cold ruining everything on Raw, creating a major feud was classic, this time around though, it’s just poorly timed, and not worth my time.
Remember I wrote about setting up Hardy for failure? Well, they are still at it, giving the fans a little glimmer of hope as if he’s more than a one trick pony. Seriously, it’s interesting to note that Jeff Hardy was being pushed as a main eventer for some time, but not because of his prowess in the ring, but more often than not the reasoning behind it was that he was willing to jump off the highest peaks, and do the daredevil style wrestling that was likened only to Mick Foley in his prime. Then they bury him while facing Orton, and Orton moves on to John Cena and Triple H.
Can Hardy beat Triple H and Cena? Probably, but the WWE is a smart company. Why would they tie down the world title with a guy that can’t speak on the mic well?
Oh, right, they did that with Chris Benoit. But then again, Benoit is now no longer regarded as a memory for anyone that has heard of the tragedy that befell him and his family.
Hardy being looked at as a one trick pony seems to be a way to fit him into matches like the every growing spot fest that is the Money in the Bank match.
I wonder if the WWE have penciled in how Edge will somehow get the case, and use it on a tired or injured world champion?
No more Rey Mysterio huh?
That means we’ll see Undertaker winning the title…or will we? This seems to be the only reason to get this ppv, simply because the streak is alive and well, but will Edge screw his way to keeping the title?
I’m not sure.
So far the WWE have a lot of ground to cover to win over my money for the ppv, it just doesn’t seem epic yet. There is no way they can win me on the triple threat match, they might get me on the Edge and Undertaker angle, but not anything else so far.
Sure it’s early, but I’m already looking critically at this year’s lackluster PPV card…It’s not as bad as Wrestlemania XV but it’s getting close.

No Way Out Boring and Cena Gets New Shirt
No Way Out was probably one of the most boring and predictable pay-per-views ever made. I know that WWE is a business, but this show was crappy. If you paid for the No Way Out 2008 ppv, please ask for your money back.
Now for Cena...he's looking good in this Nintendo-esque t-shirt. He may not be the best, but he puts butts in the seats...families that is.

The Hurricane Marvel Comics Interview
A while ago Marvel comics interviewed Edge about his love of comic books growing up, and what he takes from the comic world and works in the ring.
Well, to follow up that initial interview, the guys at Marvel Comics have updated their site with an interview from The Hurricane himself, Gregory Helms, who has always been a huge comic book fan.
Now all Marvel needs is an interview with Comic Book store owner, Rob Van Dam. Too bad the Hurricane gimmick hasn't been relevant for a long time. Check out the interview on marvel.com.

Kurt Angle and Hardcore Music
img src - Buzzgrinder.com
Kurt Angle showed up at the Victory Records offices today. Victory Records is known for putting out records in the hardcore scene from Hatebreed, Between The Buried and Me and so many more.
What's Kurt Angle doing there?
Apparently he's featured on the new Emmure album, and on the artwork for the cd that is coming out soon.
Kurt Angle singing?
I'm not sure I can take that. Remember the last time he was singing? Here's a video clip....
Who's the idiot there with him?
The owner of Victory Records.

Strangling ECW
ECW did a great thing last week with the gulf of Mexico match, not because it was the greatest match in the world, but moreover because it was something different in light of recent events.
But this week they completely trashed that notion and are strangling the life out of the ECW fans.
Why should I stay up so late for such a mediocre show?
Seriously, this thing is full of crap.
I was considering the idea that there might be some greater merit to the show, but there really isn't. ECW under a WWE umbrella is really failing to meet the mark that I want as a fan.
I'm tired today due to staying up to watch Ecw, I'm not so sure that I'm going to stay up for it next week...unless something big is announced.

The Old Men Show
I used to complain a lot about how WCW was featuring a lot of older talent. Well WWE might be pushing the same thing with the latest from Smackdown.
At least consider this:
The image above showcases three major super stars of the WWE. Fit Finlay (age 49) The Undertaker (age 43) and Batista (age 39) all of which are pushing either 40 or even 50! These guys are definitely not in their prime age of life.
Any other sport would have benched these guys, but they continue to push older talent and why not?
These guys are worth watching. I will watch them until they retire, however I am still concerned that WWE is not pushing anyone younger in the main event scene. If they are, it's in limited capacities....Edge (age 34) Rey Mysterio (age 33) C.M. Punk (age 30) are the younger talent that is promising.
But do they out number the older talent?
Not really.
Punk is more of a glorified jobber until I can see further development. Mysterio and Edge have traded blows and are the future, but Mysterio's knees are horrible so he might see early shelf, and Edge? Well Edge might be the only viable character that might see a long winded career...or maybe the bumps he took in the Ladder Matches will take their toll, sidelining him earlier than he wants.
I'm not sure. My thoughts are a little convoluted in this regard, but it's an interesting thing to note next time You watch WWE Smackdown...how old are these wrestlers?

CW Drops WWE Smackdown
This is the last year that CW will be airing Friday Night Smackdown. First UPN, then CW, now who will get Smackdown?
Fox doesn't want to have wrestling, nbc tried Saturday Night's Main Event, and now what?
ABC?
Will Smackdown go to cable?
I'm not sure where the WWE is going to find a good free network to go to, but I'm sure any network would enjoy the boost in ratings.

WWE Kills OVW and Releases Stars
WWE needs new stars. But how can they get new stars in there if they keep firing guys? Not only that, it was announced earlier today that they are severing ties with their developmental territory: OVW.
What is next for the up and comers in the wwe?
Is there any up and comers?
I'm not sure what WWE is planning, but it better be good because I'm getting tired of seeing repetition on Raw and older guys like HBK complaining about how they are not headlining Wrestlemania.
Flip the channel to TNA and what do you see over there? WWE rejects, parodies, and horrible booking.
Where is the good wrestling that I grew up on? At least ECW and Smackdown have a glimmer of hope, if only the fans and the higher ups can get behind it.

ECW Finally Gets Extreme
What I thought would be nothing more than a horrible idea from the ECW camp, turned out to be something worthwhile and worth watching! Last night on ECW they announced a "Gulf of Mexico" match for the main event, and if C.M. Punk defeated Chavo Guerrero, then he would get a title match at NO WAY OUT.
What prevailed was a falls count anywhere style match in which you have to throw your opponent into the gulf of Mexico.
It started out in the arena and I wasn't buying the story, until they took it up a notch, went outside and started getting extreme. Hip toss onto a car, a cooler to the face, and then the gts and into the moat!
Awesome! ECW had me cheering and more excited than Raw this week. I like the way they are making this feud work, regardless of what many might think. Chavo has really been carrying his own in this one.

Brock Lesnar Loses in UFC Debut
No pictures, no videos, but if you're interested in knowing what happened at UFC 81 Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar, Lesnar's UFC debut went sour fast.
The first flurry made me think that Brock Lesnar was in route to win the whole thing, lashing out with some major head shots to Frank, but it was not to be had.
Brock Lesnar lost in under two minutes by tapping out to an ANKLE LOCK! of all things...Kurt Angle's move is now legit!
Brock Lesnar LOSES in his UFC DEBUT. What's next for Lesnar?
First He can't make it in WWE, then he can't do football, now he can't do UFC...if I were Bobby Lashley, I'd take notes right now.
BROCK LESNAR LOSES UFC 81!
