WWE Smackdown April 17, 2018 Results and Review
A lot went down in an hour and a few minutes of Smackdown. People keep saying that it’s 2 hours, but it’s not. When you cut commercials out, you get about 1 hour and 20 minutes of programming, and sometimes less. Whatever the case may be, there was a lot shoved into this night of wrestling.
Aj Styles defeated Rusev via disqualification
The starting of the show had Aj Styles doing a promo but was interrupted by Rusev and Aiden English. That prompted a match between the Bulgarian Lion and Styles, but it ended when English jumped in and started to beat down Styles. That prompted a save from Daniel Bryan, and that would setup the final match later in the evening.
Jeff Hardy defeated Shelton Benjamin
Benjamin cut one hell of a heel program and then asked anyone to come down. Randy Orton showed up first, but was thwarted by Jeff Hardy. Jeff Hardy is now officially on Smackdown Live, and he ran down with the belt to challenge Benjamin with the title on the line. This was a compelling back and forth match, and it really showed the talents of both men. I loved it, and it could very well be one of the best matches of the week. Hardy would win with his final moves, but wow, Benjamin had some answers for the offense.
Harper defeated Jey Uso
The Usos were buried here, there’s no two ways about it.
Carmella Threw a Mellabration
Carmella’s little party was ok to say the least.
Samoa Joe defeated Sin Cara
Sin Cara got buried by Samoa Joe, and Joe threw down one hell of a promo.
Charlotte Flair defeated Billie Kay
Flair beat down Billie Kay and won with the figure 8, but after the match, out came Peyton Royce to beat down Flair. She was saved by Asuka, whom is now on the Smackdown Live brand. Not a great match at all.
Aj Styles and Daniel Bryan vs. Rusev and Aiden English ended in a no contest when Shinsuke Nakamura and Big Cass interfered
This wasn’t too bad. It was a good back and forth tag with Styles getting most of the action with Rusev and English, until he got the hot tag, and Bryan ran in. Bryan was doing well until Shinsuke Nakamura showed up and low blowed Styles, and then Big Cass interfered and stomped out Bryan. That was how Smackdown ended.
Shinsuke Nakamura was asked why, and he delivered a great line, “no speak English”, and I loved it.
This night seemed packed with stuff, and though it wasn’t a long night of wrestling, it worked well enough for the time frame, and there’s a lot of new faces to expect coming through.
