WWF Summerslam 1988 Results and Review The Most Beautiful Woman Ever

Summerslam 1988 VHS Cover
On August 29, 1988 the annual summer event for the WWF was held at Madison Square Garden. In front of 20,000 fans, a legit sell out, the show of shows featured some of the best of the WWF for the year of 1988. I saw this one on PPV and was absolutely enthralled. I went back to see this on the WWE Network for the purpose of review, and it holds up at times, and while it took me a while to watch it all, I’m glad I saw it again.

WWF Summerslam 1988 Review

What you’re going to find to be true about this event is that you’ll find the crowd to be wild. The crowd here was far more wild than anything you’re seeing in WWE right now. Oh and no, that doesn’t include the night after Wrestlemania, mind you.

When you go back to watch this, you’re going to hear Superstar Billy Graham and Gorilla Monsoon on commentary. They are great together and they have chemistry overall. Despite what some people say, this was a fun night of wrestling, with 10 matches and tons of fun

The British Bulldogs vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers (Time Limit Draw)

The opening match was great, with the British Bulldogs in their prime. Lots of suplexes, lots of fighting, and lots of chain wrestling. The Rougeau Brothers went to town with the Bulldogs, and the match went a time limit draw, but it was still fun and showcased the greatness of both of these teams.

Bad News Brown defeated Ken Patera

I love Bad News Brown. He put the boots to Ken Patera in this match, and then dropped him with the Ghetto Blaster. I loved it.

Rick Rude defeated the Junkyard Dog

This was a throwaway match, with JYD winning with a DQ finish. Rude was ok, but he wasn’t as good as when he would be in WCW in the coming years.

The Powers of Pain defeated The Bolsheviks

A squash match that had the crowd going, so perhaps that’s all that matters.

The Ultimate Warrior defeated The Honky Tonk Man (Intercontinental Championship)

The famous squash match, the Ultimate Warrior won the Intercontinental Championship in a squash. Honky would never recover after this.

Dino Bravo defeated Don Muraco

Random throw away match. Dino Bravo won a fast match, and Muraco would eventually leave.

Demolition defeated The Hart Foundation (Tag Team Championship)

This was a great overall match with the Hart Foundation losing after several near falls. Even here Bret Hart was a better wrestler than his partner. Demolition was no joke here, and the crowd was all over this match and the finish.

Big Boss Man defeated Koko B. Ware

Koko B. Ware is a hall of famer, and he put on a show. The crowd loved him, and the offense he threw in was great. Big Boss Man is a heel here, and he’s deceptively fast. Koko put on a show, but eventually fell to the former corrections officer. Boss Man is no joke here.

Jake Roberts defeated Hercules

Jake Roberts was so over here, and Hercules play a good heel. He would thwart Roberts at nearly every step until Roberts hit a great DDT. The DDT finish was so protected, it got the crowd going nuts when the 3 count happened. Great overall match for 1988, and Roberts was incredible. Hercules would eventually go to WCW and put on a mask.

The Mega Powers defeated The Mega Bucks

The Mega Powers were a team that consisted of Macho Man Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan. They were managed by Miss Elizabeth and looking back at this ppv, I recall how beautiful she was to me and many fans. My dad was even stricken. She was just a lovely, lovely lady, and as an adult I still have feelings for her. RIP Miss Elizabeth. The Mega Bucks was Andre The Giant and The Million Dollar Man. Ted Dibiase was a great foil and bumped like crazy in this match. Andre and Dibiase was great together, and when it seemed like the Mega Powers lost, out came Miss Elizabeth and took her skirt off. That got the crowd to go nuts, and boners to rise for young men like myself at the time. Even now, I marked out huge.

The special guest referee was Jesse The Body Ventura and he played a good down the middle ref, until the end which had Macho forcing his hand for the 3 count. This was a fun event with lots of action, and some great overall moments. The crowd was going nuts throughout the night, and it was great.

Overall, Summerslam 1988 gives me a lot of great memories, and it holds up today. If you watch the WWE Network option, they didn’t edit too much, except some of the music, and some of the commentary. Other than that, this is a great showcase for old school wrestling.
