WCW Clash of The Champions 22 1993 Results and Review

WCW Clash of The Champions was a program that WCW would put on for free These were super cards that were filmed for television and usually had around 7 matches or so, with some great main events and overall wrestling. These were FREE, but the matches were often like PPV. I’m going to be reviewing as many WCW cards as I can as I move forward with watching all of my wrestling video collection. These are available on the WWE Network since there is no DVD or VHS version of these events.

WCW Clash of The Champions 22 1993 Results

Cactus Jack defeated Johnny B. Badd
2 Cold Scorpio defeated Scotty Flamingo
Chris Benoit defeated Brad Armstrong Singles match
Vinnie Vegas defeated Tony Atlas Arm wrestling contest
The Wrecking Crew (Rage and Fury) defeated Johnny Gunn and Tom Zenk
Shane Douglas and Ricky Steamboat (c) defeated Brian Pillman and Steve Austin Tag Team match for the NWA World Tag Team Championship and WCW World Tag Team Championship
Dustin Rhodes, Sting and Cactus Jack defeated Big Van Vader, Barry Windham and Paul Orndorff In A Thundercage Tag Match

WCW Clash of The Champions 22 1993 Review

First of all Jim Ross was calling all of the action, but of course WWE snaked him and he would be at Wrestlemania later. Ross was great on the show, and well you can’t really get the same reactions from others. Here’s the card and my thoughts.

Cactus Jack defeated Johnny B. Badd

Johnny B. Badd was so cool back then. Cactus Jack was extreme, but he wasn’t as extreme as he would get with Terry Funk or with ECW. Foley was making six figures in WCW, and he was taking a beating already. He took on a few insane bumps here, and won in 3 minutes or so. Badd is so charismatic in this role, it’s fascinating.

2 Cold Scorpio defeated Scotty Flamingo

I have no clue why 2 Cold Scorpio didn’t get more of a push in WWE, he’s amazing. Flamingo is of course, Raven, and this match was fast paced. Raven could go fast back then, and Scorpio’s high flying moves are impressive. This was a fun 5 minute match.

Chris Benoit defeated Brad Armstrong

Brad Armstrong doesn’t get enough credit for being such a great wrestler. Here he shows up and wrestles a great overall match with Chris Benoit. Benoit would get the win, but Armstrong is no slouch. Bischoff once commented on the fact that Brad was a quiet, easy going guy backstage, so he never made it past the midcard at best. That sucks, cause he’s really good here.

Vinnie Vegas defeated Tony Atlas Arm wrestling contest

This is laughable. Do you know who Vinnie Vegas is? It’s Kevin Nash. Simple as that. Tony Atlast, you already know. This was pointless.

The Wrecking Crew (Rage and Fury) defeated Johnny Gunn and Tom Zenk

Not a great match, but hey, it was 1993 and the rosters weren’t as big. The Wrecking Crew are typical big heels, and Zenk with Gunn got beat down after around 6 minutes or so. A throwaway cooler match.

Shane Douglas and Ricky Steamboat (c) defeated Brian Pillman and Steve Austin Tag Team match for the NWA World Tag Team Championship and WCW World Tag Team Championship

Holy crap. This is the highlight of the show. Douglas and Steamboat are so fast here. They put on a showcase of fast paced wrestling, and Pillman is gold with Austin. The Hollywood Blondes are a tag team of epic proportions. Pillman is a wrestling superstar here, and Austin is so crisp and sells so well, you almost forget that he was fired by WCW. Pillman is incredible here, but Steamboat and Douglas are no slouches, as they pull off the big win in 15 minutes. You gotta watch this one. Their feud this year went epic, by the way.

Dustin Rhodes, Sting and Cactus Jack defeated Big Van Vader, Barry Windham and Paul Orndorff In A Thundercage Tag Match

This was odd. Before the match ever started Ron Simmons and Vader got into a fight. The main event started with Dustin Rhodes and Sting against Vader, Windham, and Mr. Wonderful. The whole thing turned into a giant brawl, and out of the blue Cactus Jack came down with some wire cutters and broke into the cage. Then he would proceed to take over and win the match for the team. This was a brawl, and led to Superbrawl’s main events.

Overall, this card was definitely a B show. It wasn’t great, but there were a few highlights. 2 Cold Scorpio, Cactus Jack, and the tag title match all make this event worth checking out on the WWE Network. I liked it a lot.

The Week In Wrestling 7/10/10

NWO

The week is done, and I've decided to start writing up commentary for the “week in wrestling, featuring news, comments, and discussion.

First up, let's talk about some wrestling news.

Wrestling News

Dragon Gate USA ran a ppv last night and I didn't see it, but am interested in seeing the independent wrestling promotion's attempt at competing with the bigger wrestling companies. I might be able to sneak a peak courtesy of a few friends I have online, but it's doubtful.

Triple H is slated to be out for a few months after getting surgery on a torn tendon in his upper arm. Needless to say, I'm NOT missing Triple H and his tendency to hold down the roster. Hopefully he's enjoying his family and time away from the ring.

Eric Bischoff said in an interview this week that the ball is basically in Daniel Bryan's court, in regards to joining the TNA roster. He also said that Paul Heyman and Dixie have talked about possibly working together, but it's not likely. All in all, Daniel Bryan's impact in just a few weeks is much better and bigger than a majority of the planned angles in WWE and it's refreshing to see interest in a smaller wrestler, from all the major companies.

Ricky Steamboat got beat down and is in the hospital, really. This is a sad news post, but at least he made it, or is recovering well. From what I know, which isn't much, the injury was NOT a result of the beat down he took from Nexus.

The WWE Ricky Steamboat 3-Disc DVD set is out, and if you purchase it from this link here, the site gets 4% of the sale. So if you want to support the site, and want to get the dvd go for it, I'd appreciate it greatly, as I'm barely scraping by right now.

Victory Road stream

TNA VICTORY ROAD 2010

This weekend, TNA will present Victory Road 2010 live on PPV. I can't afford the ppv, but am going to be watching and reviewing it. The review will be delayed, but if I can find a stream for it, I'd take advantage. It's most likely not going to happen for me live, as I can't drop $40 on a ppv right now. If you stream it, right on, I'll be giving my commentary for the card.

Speaking of cards, here's the TNA Victory Road 2010 Full PPV Card as announced so far.

TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Mr. Anderson vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Abyss vs. (c) Rob Van Dam

CHALLENGE MATCH
Ric Flair vs. Jay Lethal

CONTENDERS BATTLE
#10 Kurt Angle VS #8 "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero

STEEL CAGE MATCH
Matt Morgan vs. Hernandez

ULTIMATE X MATCH FOR THE X CHAMPIONSHIP
(Win by either Submission or claiming the Ultimate X)
Kendrick vs. (c) Douglas Williams

TNA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Beer Money vs. The Motor City Machineguns

TNA KNOCKOUTS CHAMPIONSHIP
Angelina Love vs. (c) Madison Rayne

AJ Styles & Kazarian vs. To Be Announced

Brother Ray vs. Jesse Neal vs. Brother Devon

It actually looks like a solid card, and one that you might not want to miss. I'm not sure why Kurt Angle and the Pope weren't featured on Impact, considering they have a match on sunday. I also am not sure why Samoa Joe was kidnapped. No sign of Erik Young, Suicide, and others. TNA will have to put on a 4 star show this weekend, considering their last ppv outing completely sucked.

Where's Taylor Wild and Sarita?

Where's Orlando Jordan?

Where's Big Rob Terry and his Global Championship Belt?

Where's 1/3 of the X-Division wrestlers?

TNA is completely lopsided. How many consecutive weeks did they feature all these entities and yet they have none of them on their last show before the ppv? What a waste of an Impact, that's for sure.

Comments and Responses

Shane said in regadrs to Monday Night Raw

Judging by comments dropped in the show I see the Nexus getting a strong heel leader (mainly, Jericho or Edge as the main candidates) and eventually it boiling down to a feud between Wade Barret and the new leader. Maybe for a title. Was Wade Barret stripped of his title match opportunity? Poor choice for the WWE, a Money In The Bank-type surprise championship from Wade Barret could strengthen the NXT and give the whole locker room reason to hate them.

Could Jericho or Edge be the leader of the Nexus? Maybe. I don't know if the WWE will in fact go down that road, considering that the two aren't necessarily showing any signs of it. A feud between Jericho and Barrett could be nice, and maybe able to be thrown together. Wade does not have a title shot, but if he can muscle or cheat his way into the Money In the Bank main event and win the title, that'd be epic. I wouldn't put the notion past the WWE to have Nexus attack the Money in the Bank Raw match and get Wade to claim the briefcase and cash it in on the champion in the same night. Now that'd be good overall, but highly doubtful.

Jupiterhill said in regards to Monday Night Raw

The more I saw the three factions going at it, I was thinking it will boil down to a WWE version of War Games. I know they have been toying with it for a while, and if not I see it culminating in a Survivor Series style match.

I'm not sure why they did it, but with R-Truth out of the MITB match, I could see Otunga or Barret take his spot. I mean they are under contract now so why don't they wrestle.

I'm not sure if anybody noticed, but Darren Young never tapped out of Cena's STF. I know it wouldn't have mattered, but the heel ALWAYS taps when locked into submission when it doesn't matter. Are they making Darren Young the black John Cena? Wait I mean... well having Cena like powers?

Overall I wasn't real impressed and I wished I saved the DVR space for ROH instead. By the way, I might be interested in writing reports for Superstars and NXT, and possibly Ring of Honor. I'll have to see how my internet works. I might try this week, unless you already have someone for it.

War Games in WWE? I sure hope so. Two rings, two major teams trying to go at it. My favorite War Games moment and one that is eerily similar to what's going on now is when Sting had an evil clone and quit the match, only to return and beat up the whole New World Order, at the time, and then never come back as the same.

War Games with the reunited Four Horseman fighting the New World Order was also a classic moment in the invasion angle of the late 90's. Could the invasion angle actually work out to a double cage main event? I would probably bet on a Hell in the Cell match, before War Games. As for the invasion, remember that 10 man tag where Austin turned? I'd expect that more than anything else.

R-Truth getting injured by Miz is odd. I heard on various podcasts that he could be legit injured or he failed the Wellness Policy. Who will replace him? I'm not sure, I really don't know. I just hope they don't throw in random people like they did when Shawn Michaels was injured at No Way Out 98, and the WWE gave us Savio Vega in replacement for Michaels.

Darren Young did not tap, and that was interesting. I'm not sure how the world didn't end, considering that Black John Cena and John Cena were fighting. I don't know if that even matters, but if the WWE is smart, they'll let Young say something smug about that.

Thank you overall for your comments and interest in the guest blogger position, but I'm taking the reigns on that one, despite some serious contenders. I am trying to figure out the ROH schedule and I'll add reviews for that and more, if I get more video sources on a regular basis.

Super Cena and WCW Uncensored

Coming this Monday night, the Nexus 7 Will face off against John Cena in a handicap match. I have my reservations about this match, and it reminds me too much of the Macho Man & Hogan vs the complete Dungeon of Doom and Ric Flair match that WCW did at Uncensored 1996.

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage defeated Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Meng, The Barbarian, Lex Luger, Kevin Sullivan, Z-Gangsta and The Ultimate Solution in a tri-level cage match.

Can Super John Cena fight off 7 guys? Well, Hogan and Savage took out 8 guys in a cage match, so anything is possible right?

I am sick of John Cena winning all the time and I'm sick of his gimmick. His actions on Monday were NOT PG and I'm just getting tired of WWE's super hero. Sure, I marked out huge for Hogan in the 80's, but that was the 80's and I was a little kid, I'm much older now, I need something more than a super hero in professional wrestling. A heel, rapping, John Cena would fit perfectly here and he's advanced to a place where he can possibly get over as a major heel and antihero.

That's the end of this week.

That's the end of this week folks, hopefully you enjoyed some wrestling and what not. Check out the TNA ppv if you can, let me know your comments after I review it. Ever week I'll be doing this weekend report after the Smackdown Review so keep tuned. If you haven't already check out the RSS FEED by clicking HERE.

Lastly, please support the site by visiting AMAZON.COM and bookmarking it. It helps the site and I can start moving towards my own dot com and start working on a podcast. I'll also try and hook you guys up with free stuff along the way too.

WWE Backlash 2009 Results and Review

WWE Backlash 2009 Results

Christian defeated Jack Swagger to win the ECW Championship
Chris Jericho defeated Ricky The Dragon Steamboat
Kane defeated CM Punk
Jeff Hardy defeated Matt Hardy in an I Quit Match
Santina defeated Beth Phoenix
Ted Dibiase Jr, Cody Rhodes, and Randy Orton defeated Shane McMahon, Batista, and Triple H
Edge defeated John Cena in the World Championship Last Man Standing match

WWE Backlash 2009 Review

After a weird week with my cable set up, I finally got things ironed out, at least I hoped. The 2009 Backlash ppv was looking to be quite strong on paper, but would it deliver? We’ll see…here is my review of sorts of Backlash 2009 WWE ppv.

Christian defeated Jack Swagger to win the ECW Championship

Right off the bat the ECW Championship was on the line. Ever since Christian came into the WWE he’s been fighting an uphill battle to get back to the main event spotlight. Jack Swagger has been “the man” over on ECW for so long that it was nice to see a little different event. This match started with a little back and forth, but moreover Jack Swagger was dominating, showing that he could manhandle Christian with his power. Swagger seemed one step ahead of Christian’s counters early on, and it was interesting to note that Swagger was made to look like the smarter wrestler, as he was definitely showing off his move set, which was a change for a champion in the WWE. Christian turned things around mid match by putting his knees up after Swagger tried a splash using the ropes. Christian got a second wind and looked poised to win with a top rope sunset flip, but it only garnered a two count. Swagger kept going for his gut wrench power bomb, but Christian kept fighting it off. Christian managed to pull a tornado ddt from the far corner, and it seemed mathematic at this point, but it was only a two count. The match progressed into near fall after near fall with neither opponent getting too close. A frustrated Swagger seemed to have things sewn up, but it was Christian that got the last laugh as he won this match and became the ECW champion! Christian is the new ECW champion. Christian used an exposed turnbuckle to set up the unprettier and the win.

Chris Jericho defeated Ricky The Dragon Steamboat

This match wasn’t that great. Sure the two competitors tried to put on a good show, but Ricky Steamboat is way past his prime. Steamboat started this match off with some basic mat wrestling, Jericho tried to brawl up front, but it didn’t seem to work out too well early on. Jericho took control of this match up with ease and started to systematically breakdown steamboat. A back suplex out the corner was a nice touch to an otherwise very slow moving match up. A bunch of nearfalls later, including the Walls of Jericho countered into a figure four, and we had ourselves an ok match up. However, it spun back into the Walls of Jericho for the win. Steamboat put up a good fight, but didn’t win this one, and Jericho once again wins.

Kane defeated CM Punk

I didn’t know this match was going to be on the card, but it was indeed interesting to see. The match started with Punk going all out to stop Kane. Kane was taking full control towards the mid match. Punk nearly got an STF, but wasn’t able to finish Kane, and was attempting to get the upper hand, but Kane seemed like he was going to win big. However, CM Punk was dropping bombs. After a huge choke slam, Kane picked up the victory.

Jeff Hardy defeated Matt Hardy in an I Quit Match

Jeff Hardy started this match straight up, fighting with all he had to seclude Matt Hardy. Matt had a lot of nothing to give early on, as Jeff had this thing sewn up early on. Jeff was putting on a clinic, putting his best moves forward. But Matt Hardy wasn’t going to lie down and just lose, the match turned around and Jeff Hardy was now on the receiving end of things. The match began to slow down tremendously, and towards the middle it was just random rest holds. The longest being a half Boston Crab by Matt on Jeff, that just seemed overkill for such a high profile match up. The match really had the crowd mesmerized as Matt Hardy was knocked out in ring and Jeff went outside to get a table. Jeff duct taped Matt’s legs and arms together all while on the table. He then tied him to the table with ropes! Jeff then proceeded to set up a ladder! Matt got on the mic and said he Loved Jeff and it was weird. Jeff climbed to the top of the ladder, Matt then quit; losing the match. However, Jeff still delivered a huge leg drop off the top rope through a table!

Santina defeated Beth Phoenix

The Great Khali was scheduled to kiss “Santina” at this point in the ppv. Santina claimed that she was in love with Jim Ross and that she couldn’t kiss Great Khali. Khali agreed not to kiss Santina if she kissed JR! Beth Phoenix came out and told everyone that Santina was really Santino! Khali hit Beth Phoenix in the head, and then pushed her over! Santina then jumped into action and pinned Beth Phoenix! This is the weirdest piece of ppv history ever in the WWE.

Post match Santina ran out of the ring clutching his/her chest! So much or that pg rating huh?

Ted Dibiase Jr, Cody Rhodes, and Randy Orton defeated Shane McMahon, Batista, and Triple H

Randy Orton is the new WWE Championship

This match bega with a complete melee; Triple H and Orton immediately took each other outside of the ring, and down the ramp. Triple H returned without Orton and it seemed to be two on three. At least at first, as Cody Rhodes ad Ted Dibiase were stuck trying to battle the McMahon team. Shane & Cody got things started as the bell rang and the match started out, and then it was Triple H and Batista that were working over Priceless with ease. Batista hit a nice delayed vertical suplex, and it was better if not as good as The Franchise Shane Douglas! Batista put on a clinic in there, beating the crap out of Cody and Ted. He stopped short of delivering the Batista Bomb. Randy Orton ran down to the ring, and brought himself back into the match up. He fought off Batista’s attack and brought the match to their favor. It seemed like whenever one team got on a roll, it was turned over immediately with a hot tag, making for a nice fast paced match, but no clear story, which isn’t terrible, but it just seemed different from the traditional six man tag fair that the WWE usually throws at us on ppv. I spoke too soon, because moments later this match up turned into a slower paced match as Shane Mcmahon was isolated in the ring against Cody Rhodes. Priceless then took turns working over Shane McMahon in this match up, and it looked like he was on his way to getting pinned. The ring cleared and only two people were left in the match up, and Triple H was knocked out with an RKO! Then after a very false finish with the bell rung and all, the ref distracted Orton punted the crap out of Triple H and pinned him. Batista essentially cost Triple H the belt because he distracted the ref and well…I’m doing a terrible job explaining it all, it was really chaotic at the end. Wow…Triple H finally loses. Randy Orton pinned Triple H and afterwards was carried out on a stretcher as Triple H was kicked really hard in the head. I don’t think he was seriously injured, but it looked bad. Maybe this is going to mark a break for Triple H for a while now. Who knows?

The crowd was yelling at Batista left and right. Death to Batista etc; Triple H was wheeled out of the ringside area via the ramp on a full stretcher.

Edge defeated John Cena in the World Championship Last Man Standing match

This match started out slow, and I wasn’t really into it. I have seen these guys wrestle way too much in my lifetime. I don’t know if anyone really cared about this match, as it was really not going strong at all for me, and while the crowd to be into it somewhat, I wasn’t at all. Edge had some rest hold in and continued to just try to rest hold Cena to death. He had a sleeper hold locked in for a good 8 to 10 minutes. The action spilled outside, proving once again that this match might have some valid points. However, the two men moved back into the ring for more. Cena brought the steel steps into the ring, and was keen on using them to knockout Edge. Edge was the one that capitalized on using the stairs as a weapon in this match, hitting Cena square in the shoulders with them after a running Baseball Slide into the corner. John Cena lifted the steps and threw them at Edge outside of the ring, hitting Edge square in the face with them, and nearly knocking him out. The lamest part of this match was that both competitors nearly knocked each other out with punches. Yep. Punches. They made it interesting with Edge trying a “You Can’t See Me” which led John Cena to hit the STF! Edge was tapping like a drunk man, but it wasn’t helping at all. Cena hit a mid rope Attitude Adjustment and this thing looked said and done. Edge was completely out, and it did look good, as it waked up the crowd and made me almost interested in this match up. Cena leaped off the top rope but Edge caught him in mid air and hit a SPEAR! This looked like the End for sure. Edge then propped Cena onto the announcers table outside the ring and it was to no avail! Cena dumped Edge onto the first three rows of FANS! That’s right, EDGE was thrown into the first three ROWS OF FANS! The two guys managed to get themselves to the ramp area and shades of Royal Rumble 99 hit me. Edge then hit a nice ddt on the ramp! Cena looked out cold, but I knew it wasn’t over. This match slowly turned me into a believer as I really wanted to see who would win this one. The Big Show came out! The Big Show then grabbed Cena and dropped him off the side of a Stage into a weird Electrical unit that Exploded! Yep. This weird glass, electrical light fixture completed exploded with Cena inside! It was a really interesting lighting effect and Edge won this match! Edge is the NEW World Heavyweight champion!

Not a bad ppv. That ending was great. I wanted C.M Punk to cash in Money in the Bank right then and there, but it didn’t look like it was in the cards. It looked marvelous seriously, it looked amazing, Cena took a sweet bump right into the stage lights and the explosion rocked the crowd and it looked legit. I liked how it turned out.

That ending sealed the deal. Edge champion, wow; Orton and Edge are now champions.

Good overall ppv. Cena looked dead.
