WCW The Great American Bash 1997 Results and Review: A Better VHS Experience

The Great American Bash 1997 Poster
On June 15, 1997 around 9,613 people packed into The Mark of the Quad Cities in Moline, Illinois for The Great American Bash. This had a total of 9 matches and nearly ran out of time when it was presented. I didn’t get it live, but I had the VHS tape and can tell you that the WWE network experience is very edited. The music is different, the signs are blurred, and even some of the commentary is missing. Also, there are edits in the angles, and much more. It’s for that reason why I recommend you get the vhs tape.

You can purchase WCW The Great American Bash 1997 by clicking here for the VHS tape

WCW The Great American Bash 1997 Review

From the results, you are not going to be blown away. But there were some insane matches on this card, and that’s what saves this overall. If you’re a collector then you will definitely want to pick up the VHS tape of this, or if you’re a casual WCW fan, then check out the WWE Network, neutered version.

Ultimate Dragon defeated Pyschosis

The first match on the card wasn’t fast paced. It was an ongoing storyline in which Sonny Onoo was recruiting cruiserweight talent to beat up Ultimate Dragon because he didn’t want to align with Onoo any longer. Anyways, this match was really good, well paced, and strong style. Dragon is an incredible talent, and Psychosis should’ve been on par with Rey Mysterio in the WWE, but for whatever reason the WWE never gave him a shot the same way. Anyways, this match was exciting, and had a great overall finish.

Match Rating: 3 out of 5

Harlem Heat defeated The Steiner Bros. by disqualification

The one thing that I took away from this match was that it was strong, and stiff. The Steiner Brothers and Harlem Heat were not pulling punches. They were hitting as hard as they could against one another, and it looked awful on the screen. If you’re a fan of hard hitting action, this match will suffice.

Match Rating: 2 out of 5

Konnan defeated Hugh Morrus

Hugh Morrus always surprised me. I loved how fast he could move in ring. Konnan has always been a favorite of mine, and in this match he really worked well with Hugh. Even though the match was passable, it wasn’t anything to write home about.

Match Rating: 2 out of 5

Glacier defeated Wrath

This was a slow down in the event, but the two guys were feuding at the time. Glacier has a really cool entrance and I loved the idea at the time. Going back to see it, however, it wasn’t that grand. It was ok.

Match Rating: 2 out of 5

Akira Hokuto defeated Madusa for the WCW Women’s Championship and retirement

Madusa’s final match, and it wasn’t half bad. Madusa loses the title and retires here. She seemed to have legitimately hurt her knee here. Other than that, it was ok, nothing crazy, in a wasted division on WCW.

Match Rating: 2 out of 5

Chris Benoit defeated Meng

Chris Benoit had been going through the Dungeon of Doom 1 by 1. This was another hurdle he had to cross this year. Every PPV Benoit was getting beat up by Kevin Sullivan and the Dungeon of Doom. This was a hard hitting match, and Benoit came through with great toughness, and if you follow wrestling, then you already know that this led to the retirement of Kevin Sullivan at Bash At The Beach 97, which was a great match between the two.

Match Rating: 3 out of 5

Kevin Greene defeated Steve McMichael

Even though this sounds terrible, it wasn’t half bad. It was a fun match, even though it seems like an odd pick today.

Match Rating: 2 out of 5

The Outsiders defeated Ric Flair and Roddy Piper

Roddy Piper had hip surgery and he had a HUGE scar on his leg, and the outsiders were attacking at will. Flair and Piper did well here, and it was interesting to see them fight The Outsiders to get the titles, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. The big men were not ready to vacate just yet, and they won with the crowd going absolutely nuts. Standard match here, nothing too crazy, but always fun to see Flair and Piper put on performances.

Match Rating: 3 out of 5

Randy Savage defeated Diamond Dallas Page in a Falls Count Anywhere Match

Now, this was the main reason why I wanted to rewatch this event. Savage and DDP had been feuding with the two fighting across Nitro. The two would meet this time around for the second time, the previous encounter being at Spring Stamped 1997. In that match, DDP was able to get the win after an insane finish. This time around, Macho won with help from Scott Hall. DDP and Savage worked very stiff here, like a glove, and the refs got beat down throughout. DDP had a legit looking rib injury and Savage landing on his ribs nearly killed the guy, as you may have heard from shoot interviews. You can see it right after the 3 count as DDP tells Macho to get off of his ribs. This 15 minute match was everything that a good feud should be, and the two just made each other so much better. Great match that would lead to a third and final match at Halloween Havoc 1997.

Match Rating: 4 out of 5

The main reason to watch WCW The Great American Bash 1997 is for that main event. That main event holds up very well, with the two putting on a showcase of strong wrestling, and the crowd going absolutely nuts for it. Great match, albeit a bit short.

I recommend getting WCW The Great American Bash 1997 by clicking here for the VHS tape, and NOT watching it on the WWE Network.

This is heavily edited without the original music, and a lot of other liberties that the WWE has gone through to make this a bit different. If you haven’t seen the original, you won’t notice it, but I have seen the original and had the VHS tape so I can tell you it’s way different.

Overanalyzing Wrestling: Christian Edition

Boogeyman

The funniest thing to come out of wrestling this week didn't happen on any show. The funny thing about wrestling behind the scene's is stranger than anything that can be presented on screen. So check this out, Boogeyman and Booker T are hanging out together and they go to a sports bar to watch an NFL game. They get asked to leave because Boogey has a cross necklace on and its against the dress code. Before anything could go down however, Booker and Boogey leave. Sad huh? Can you imagine if the bar owners fought Boogeyman and Booker T? That would be incredibly hilarious to me. Look for Boogeyman to make his return on Halloween...or not.

Did you hear about Evan Bourne? Kid's done for 4 months thanks a legit injury on ECW. That's right, Evan Bourne suffered a legit injury. He tore ligaments in his ankle. This means that Vinnie Mac is once again going to ground the cruiserweights, as if there were many to talk about. This is a sad thing for Bourne, he was getting a good push through the WWE ranks. I wonder how it is that the mexican Lucha Libre stars are able to have a high flying offense and yet they don't have nearly as many injuries as the WWE stars. It's just funny to me.

In recent comments made by Y2J, he said that punching Shawn Michael's wife was tough but that it all worked out. I remember when that went down, it was nuts, Chris Jericho got real heat on that one, that's for sure.

This week in wrestling has been lackluster so far, to say the least. I mean there was a few good moments, but overall I'm not as excited as I once was. I am not sure if I ever will be marking out as much as I did when I was a little kid watching Hogan and Andre battle it out. However, I'm still here, don't worry.

Here's a classic match for you guys from vaults of WCW:

War Games 1989 from The Great American Bash:

The Road Warriors, The Midnight Express and Steve Williams vs. The Fabulous Freebirds and The Samoan Swat Team

The Great American Bash 2008 Results

Dark Match Result:

Umaga defeated Kennedy in a Dark Match

Umaga beats Kennedy again? Is Kennedy being punished for something? This sucks.

WWE Tag Team Championship Match
Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder defeated John Morrison & The Miz , Finlay & Hornswoggle,. Jesse & Festus

Dude, this is insane, I can’t believe the Edgekins have the titles now! I like this though, because at least they are a real tag team in a sense, rather than a pair of single wrestlers put together. The titles needed a change, and now we can maybe start a new era in the WWE’s tag team division.

Shelton Benjamin defeated Matt Hardy

Shelton wins the U.S Title in this championship match, and hopefully will be more than just a jobber! I think things are looking bright for the gold standard, and I’m hoping the WWE doesn’t screw this up for Shelton. Now what happens with Hardy? I’m not sure.

ECW Champion Mark Henry defeated Tommy Dreamer

No surprise here. This was most likely a boring, horrible match.

Chris Jericho defeated Shawn Michaels

Word on the street is that Shawn Michaels suffered an eye injury in this match up and the ref had to call the match because Michaels was too injured to compete. If this is a legitimate injury, I hope Michaels comes back stronger, if this is a work, it’s a lame piece of crap ending.

Michelle McCool defeated Natalya

McCool becomes the first Divas champion, and no one cares, at least I don’t.

WWE Champion CM Punk and Batista wrestled to a Double DQ

Kane came out and interfered with this match up, CM Punk ended up retaining thanks to the double dq. This most likely sets up a three way match for the title sooner than later.

JBL defeated John Cena in a NYC Brawl

From what I hear, this was the dumbest match ever. Cena gets thrown off the stage into a windshield and loses. Lame match. Where was Cryme Tyme for the save?

WWE World Champion Triple H defeated Edge

The wedding planner got involved in this match up, and things were just downhill from what I read. Triple H wins again, and the story between the weeding planner, Edge’s cheating ways, and Vickie continues. This match must have been horrible. What a horrible ending. Just tired. I’m glad I didn’t get this one, I would have been really upset.

I saved 34.95 Tonight! GAB Results

The big story from the bash was that I was right about almost all my predictions.

KHALI walked out as Champion, Cena beat lashley,Umaga stayed strong,Carlito BEAT Sandman,Candice won again,They bastardized the cruiserweight title...

oh and they totally lost my respect...as Orton defeated Rhodes.

I was so upset over the results that I am extremely glad I DID NOT order the PPV.

WWE 24/7 Presents: WCW Great American Bash 1988

This was a great day for the WCW fans because in a sold out arena of 14,000 and a world wide ppv audience, The Great American Bash came to town. Since I have WWE 24/7 I was excited, and instead of reviewing every little aspect of this one, I had to comment on the ridiculousness of the match that was "The Tower of Doom"

There are three cages, like in the 1996 match where Hogan and Savage beat up 9 guys to win the Tower of Doom match.

10 Men enter one by one on the top of the cage, and every couple minutes they are let in to a larger cage, then into the ring surrounding by another cage! Three stories of mayhem.

The top cage is so small though that you can only throw a punch. So people flood into the second cage immediately following the opening.

After they reach the first cage a participant is let out of the cage and after all 4 members of his team are let out, that team wins!

Sounds like a convoluted war games match up, and well...it most certainly is. The participants were:

The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal), Steve Williams, Jimmy Garvin and Ron Garvin (w/Precious) vs. Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda, Al Perez, The Russian Assassin and Ivan Koloff (w/Gary Hart)

The match is ridiculous and the gimmick is funny. The overall match up was very interesting, hearing Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone on commentary, but the match was just lame.

The rest of the card was good though and had the following:

NWA World Tag Team Champions Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard (w/James J. Dillon) vs. Sting and Nikita Koloff NWA Tag Team Championship

The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane) (w/Jim Cornette) vs. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers)NWA United States Tag Team Championship

Barry Windham (w/James J. Dillon) vs. Dusty Rhodes NWA United States Championship

Ric Flair (w/James J. Dillon) vs.Lex Luger Nwa Heavyweight Championship Match

Overall WWE 24/7 brings a classic card and ppv from the library of NWA & WCW

Here's the match from youtube...
