What’s this? A ppv review from your pal sir j? Yeah, once again I’ve managed to scrape up a few dimes together to watch this piece of crap we call tna ppv. I am barely scraping by, so I had to save a few bucks to get this, so I hope that you, the reader, can appreciate my tone and my review here, as I’m doing it for the love of the game, not for money. I wish I had more of both, that’s for sure.
The show opened up in black and white with clips from the public domain of recession. It also showed some previous things that went down on TNA Impact the last few weeks. Overall not a great intro, and I could do without hearing Hoobastank every five seconds. Seriously, why did Hoobastank get picked? They suck, this intro sucks, and boy am not looking forward to more tna ppv’s…unless they change their booking completely.
Taylor Wilde, Roxxi, and The Governor defeated The Beautiful People & Madison Rayne
The Governor started this match, even though no one cares about Sarah Palin any longer. Oh well, here we go, the start of this match up, nothing too insane here, just your average start. The Governor is out there barefoot, and it’s interesting to see, I don’t think there are a lot of wrestlers out there without their boots. The match then moved forward from that point with the good guys (I should say gals) in full control. I also must note that Don West is out there with Mike Tenay, though he still sucks if you ask me; and I know you didn’t. The match was fast paced, a lot of distracting the ref here and there, which is interesting for sure. The match went into a melee, and things got crazy outside, leaving Taylor Wilde inside to get the pinfall after a bridge suplex. This match was ok at best, it seemed rushed at the end, and before things could settle, we went to the backstage area. TNA did a terrible job with the knockout match up, it was lame; oh well.
*note The Brutus Magnus graphic was premature, so if you were quick, you caught it.
**note again, out came a Navy Officer to be the guest ring announcer.
Brutus Magnus defeated Eric Young
Eric Young will face off against Brutus, and why not? The kid is on a minor roll, with that big win on Thursday against some fat dude that the Main Event Mafia found. Brutus Magnus didn’t catch Eric Young off of a moonsault from the corner, and the crowd made the two wrestlers eat it, and it showed that Magnus is not quite ready for the ppv world. He’s not that good, face it, I’m not sure why they are trying to make this star, as I don’t really like him, and while there are some moments of glory, he’s just not there yet, at least in my opinion. Magnus was not half bad with that top rope finisher, which was insane, if you saw it. It was a fireman’s carry to jump off the top rope, almost like death valley driver in a way. Good overall ending, but a terrible match up if you ask me. Once again it seemed rushed.
Sheik Abdul Bashir came out and just randomly yelled about how TNA is racist for not hiring him to wrestle. Jim Cornette came out to yell at Bashir to tell him that no one likes him, and that’s why he’s not on the ppv. He then had that Naval Officer come into the ring (Cornette called him up). The naval dude starts to sing “God Bless America”. Bashir has no choice but to leave, seemingly disgusted. This is a dumb angle, and I’m not sure why the TNA writers keep trying to push this, they don’t need it.
Matt Morgan defeated Abyss in a 10,000 Tacks Match
This match started out fast, with both men throwing haymakers, and pushing forth a great amount of effort. Of course, this thing had to slow down, because it wasn’t going to be a progressive match with the amount of brutality that these two started out with. Matt Morgan and Abyss fought to the ramp entrance, with Morgan hitting the Carbon Footprint right into the tacks. It was a wicked fall, and that was the end of the match up.
ODB had some stupid getting a date contest, it was dumb. Some dude named Deter or something, it was stupid, this is the dumbest thing I’ve seen on tna in a long time.
Awesome Kong defeated Sojourner Bolt in a TNA Knockouts Title Match
This match had a good opening, with Bolt sending every offensive move she had early on, but it was Kong who pushed her weight around and began to dominate with heavy moves that gave her a lot of breathing room and like a bigger wrestler, she just methodically worked over Bolt, causing a lot of strain. Things took a slight turn when Kong missed a huge splash off the top rope, causing Bolt to get a second chance in this match up. She went for quick pins, and tight rolls ups, but couldn’t score the three count. Bolt got caught trying a Hurricanrana which proved to be the end of her match up with Awesome Kong dropping her on the back of her neck and winning the match; another successful defense.
Samoa Joe vs. Scott Steiner ended in a no contest
Samoa Joe came in and just started a fist fight with Scott Steiner. Nothing else, just a straight fist fight, as he ran in and started off fighting, busting open Scott Steiner immediately. This match was the same match we saw with Edge and Matt Hardy when Hardy came back from being fired. Steiner got busted open, Joe beat up the ref, the match was thrown out, I guess Scott Steiner kind of wins via dq, right? I don’t know.
Aj Styles defeated Booker T in a Legends Championship Match
This match started off a little slower than the previous matches, and rightfully so. Booker To isolated Aj’s Arm for a good part of this match up, creating a little space between him and the high flyer. Aj did mnage to get a few high spots in, but Booker was definitely putting the rest holds on this thing and offering a more technically sound match up. The two guys looked evenly matched at the midway of this match, but Booker seemed to be one step ahead of Aj Styles, seriously pushing the limits of the former heavyweight champion. Aj Styles was wobbly at this point, creating doubt in many people’s minds as to whether or not he can really beat the big man. Booker and Aj had perfect timing with some high spot reversals, at one point Booker caught Aj coming off the top rope, and it was just perfect timing. The Styles Clash got the better of Booker T and things finally got good for Aj Styles as he is the new Legends Champion!
Backstage, apparently Samoa Joe murdered Scott Steiner? He had that stupid looking knife of his full of blood. Nice huh? Great job TNA writers, allude to the fact that Joe stabbed Steiner, great writing, great stupid writing! I hate Tna sometimes.
Team 3-D defeated Beer Money via count out in a TNA Tag Team Championship match
Team 3-D was the odds on favorite here, as there was no way that TNA would fire one of their veteran tag teams, leaving them without 2 solid workers. It’s not like the WWE would want another run of Team 3-d, considering that both guys are not as slim and beefed up as they were in WWE. Beer Money were not doing well early on in this match, Devon had things going quite well in the onset of this match up. Team 3-D had a lo of good moments in this match up, and Beer Money were definitely getting out wrestled on more than one occasion in this match up. The comedy spots were a bit too much, which was really weird. The match was thrown out, when Beer Money brought a chair in and Team 3-D wins, via disqualification…
Then the match got restarted and Beer Money walked away with a ten count. This match sucked, well the ending sucked. Don West helped a little, and even after Jim Cornette tried to chase down Beer Money, Team 3-D came to Don West and told him to watch his back! Team 3-D got screwed, and this was boring at the end.
Suicide defeated Consequences Creed, Jay Lethal, and The Motor City Machine Guns in a destination x match for the x division championship
This match opened up like it should have, straight forward, fast paced action. The Motor City Machine Guns had the advantage going into this match up, especially since their always in the ring together as a team. It seemed like they were set to win this, considering this match started at 7 pm pst. Obviously there were some high spots, the spots ranged from going outside of the ring to simple top rope action. Suicide was not doing all that well, at least not early on, it seemed that anything he wanted to do was thwarted by someone in the ring. The match up quickly spilled to the outside and Suicide managed a rolling thunder move onto four of his competitors, making for a good overall replay high spot. By the time it was time to do the super electric chair/powerbomb spot, I got tired of this match. Seriously, these matches are just spot fests and there’s very little psychology to them. I know we’re dealing with a match that was supposed to magnify the x-division, but this is getting ridiculous. I guess I’m starting to dislike spot fests, it just seems so obvious to me, a little too obvious. After all the whining I did about this match, it did have a cool ending. Suicide jumped off the top of a pillar onto the middle of the destination x set up, and knocked all competitors off, to win the x-division championship!
Sting defeated Kurt Angle in a World Heavyweight Championship Match
Finally, the main event, and this one started with neither man truly getting the edge. Kurt Angle and Sting started with heavy blows, meanwhile Sting kept knocking Kurt Angle out of the ring at every chance he could. The fight then spilled out to the floor and we finally had a good match going. After a short fight on the floor, we got the rest holds, with Angle trying to hold down Sting in order to wear him out. I really liked the midway point of this match when both men went for the double cross body block. That was definitely something you’d see in the mid 90’s era main event. I can’t appreciate the constant rest holds by Angle. I know that it worked for a lot of technical wrestlers, but those were in combination with their finishing moves. It seems like Angle just wants to slow things down so he can get the Angle Slam. Which he got onto Sting for a two count! Sting missed a Stinger splash, which got him an Angle Slam for his trouble. Kurt’s Moonsault is dead on accurate still, but he couldn’t put Sting away with that either. The Rolling German Suplex’s have to be hurting Angle’s neck, and they were promptly turned into a Scorpion Death Drop, prompting another two count. Double J, for all the feuding he has done, actually didn’t get involved too much, until he got hit with a HUGE lariat from Angle on accident. This prompted Mick Foley to jump in the ring, meanwhile Sting had the Scorpion Death Lock on a tapping Angle. Angle managed to get back into it, meanwhile Jeff Jarrett was still out, but then when Foley failed to count to three Angle kicked him in the nuts! This was rad, Angle finally snapped and he had Jarrett and Foley both knocked out cold! Foley got in the mix and accidentally hit Sting with a Steel Chair! Things were starting to look like Summerslam 1997 all over again! As Angle couldn’t put away Sting, he kept getting angry at Jarrett and started to slap him around a little. That prompted Sting to get the upper hand with a little help from Double J and it was all over! That’s right, Sting once again defeats Kurt Angle and is still the TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
This ppv sucked. This final match wasn’t all that great, and I can’t believe that the TNA ppv crew cost me another forty bucks or so. I hate these guys sometimes. Sting, come on man, Angle? Come on dude…seriously? TNA needs to change things up dramatically.
