WWE Friday Night Smackdown 8/7/09 Review

CM Punk was out to ring side and giving a heel promo, guised as a face promo? He was talking about how the fans need him, and that he is better than Hardy because he doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs.

CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy no contest

This match never got off the ground, the two were fighting so hard that it prompted security to come out and separate them. This was so out of control that it prompted Vince McMahon to come out and talk about how Teddy Long is on probation, and introduced a new guest enforcer for the title match between Hardy and Punk.

The guest enforcer is, to be announced.

Hardy then lunged at Punk, and Punk escaped to ringside. This match for all intents and purposes was a no contest, for now.

John Morrison defeated Tyson Kidd

I admit, Morrison is good, but I’m not a fan. Kidd is ok, but I’m not a fan either. Maybe the two could wake me up from my pizza coma, as I had pizza for dinner. Early on the match was somewhat slow, to start, however once the battle went to the floor Kidd got the leg up, and was overpowering Morrison with the numbers game. Morisson, after the break, was all over Kidd with heavy weight moves. Including a signature Standing Moonsault, creating a near fall that jolted him. Kidd was trying to keep up, but was actually out wrestled by a heavier, more agile Morrison. Morrison did get into a cross submission maneuver, and looked decent, but it just seemed a little sloppy in comparison to Morrison. Morrison hit Starship Pain on Kidd’s FACE! No doubt hurting the lad, and this match was over. Kidd got hit hard, I’m surprised that Kidd wasn’t legit knocked out, as Morrison looked a little bit callous and reckless with that final move for the win.

Slam Master J defeated Charlie Haas

Jam Master J picked up his first win on Smackdown as a solo wrestler. Haas did ok, but this was another job well done for good ol’ Charlie Haas who just basically laid down for Master J to win. This was another one of Charlie Haas’s losses, face it, he’s on his way out.

Dolph Ziggler defeated Finlay, R Truth, and Mike Knox

This match featured four IC title contenders, in a free for all type match. Each one was hitting hard and no one was getting the clear advantage early on. Mike Knox looked like he was going to win this one, but after a few near falls, it was a cluster of humanity in the ring. Each member getting shots on the other, eventually it was Dolph Ziggler getting over with a pinfall. Ziggler wasn’t a major factor in this match, and in fact the only one that seemed to get a big reaction was R Truth, but it was to no avail, Ziggler will once again try to steal the show with Rey for the Intercontinental title at summerslam.

JTG defeated Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho can make anyone look good and he proved it in this match. JTG is not a top worker, yet he strung together an alright match with none other than Jericho, who is simply on top of his game right now. The two exchanged some quick pinfalls, and near misses, with Jericho putting over JTG in the end. JTG hit a nice top rope leg drop, and when Jericho thought he had won this one after a codebreaker, JTG managed to roll up Jericho while he was arguing with the ref, getting the quick pinfall! JTG defeated Jericho, and this match wasn’t half bad.

The Great Khali defeated Ricky Ortiz

Ricky Ortiz might be on his way out too, because he just lost in like 5 minutes. Khali hit the plunge and then pinned Ortiz with ease. A total squash; maybe Ortiz is next to get thrown out aka fired.

Jeff hardy defeated CM Punk w/ special guest enforcer Matt hardy

Matt Hardy is back and he has his cast off. He looks to have gained a little weight too, and he’s going to be the enforcer!

Jeff Hardy started this match like the champ, fast and easily putting Punk at bay, holding onto the overall aptitude of the match up. Punk turned things around after the commercial break and looked like he was going to get the upper hand in this match up, but wasn’t able to counter some of Hardy’s offense, which sometimes came out of nowhere with no way to telegraph things. Punk hit a picture perfect top rope superplex and was ready to hit the GTS, looking like the title was in his reach, but instead decided to punish hardy a little before hand, allowing Hardy to reverse it, only to get into a nearfall yet again. Punk jumped to the outside where Matt and Jeff had to face each other, but nothing happened…until Punk baseball slid Matt to the floor! Hardy capitalized on the distraction and hit the Twist of Fate then went for the Swanton Bomb, but Punk got his knees up! Matt pulled the referee while Punk was at a 2 count! Hardy then hit a nice roll up, and Matt counted really fast, allowing Hardy to win the match, and punk was left mad at Matt! Punk then chased Matt…this thing has some interesting turning points, it’ll be interesting to see where this all goes in the near future.

Smackdown wasn’t all that great. However, after last night’s terrible night of wrestling, this was much appreciated.

Post match, Punk once again pummeled Jeff Hardy, hitting him with a chair and making short work of Hardy, too bad it was after the match was over!
