This Week In Pro Wrestling 12/18/10

This is my first and new commentary post that I will be doing each week as a way to not only add content to this blog but also run down what were the highlights in professional wrestling this week.

Memorable Moments

Raw

This week started out with the Slammy Awards edition of Raw. They said it was 3 hours, but it was really only about 2 hours and 10 minutes or so. The most memorable thing from Raw had to be John Cena and David Otunga.

John Cena defeated David Otunga in a major beat down match, and although I've seen this match before, I found that the dynamic between Nexus and Otunga seems to be the better story than just Cena getting rehired. I would love to see Wade Barrett get ousted as the leader much like NWO got split, and Nexus beat up Wade Barrett, turning him into the ultimate good guy along Cena...the unlikely team. A swerve angle might work there too, but Cena not trusting the new Wade would be interesting to say the least.

David Arquette coming back was interesting for me, although many people didn't see the point. It was a nice throwback, if you ask me, and from what I read about the backstage reaction, many people liked him.

Superstars

Zack Ryder defeated Darren Young in an interesting match. If you missed it, than you are not in the minority at else. Supserstars is not exactly the A list show and the ratings for it are terrible. I managed to see it, and out of all the wrestling this week, I think I enjoyed this match too much for my own good.

TNA Impact

Jay Lethal and Robbie E put on one hell of a match. I actually loved it so much and what made it better than their ppv match was the fact that Christy Hemme ran down to help Jay Lethal. Hemme is hot, I'd love to meet her and she seems like she would have a lot of energy and would chat my ear off. Jay Lethal recapturing the X-Division title was a good thing, but where TNA will go with the title and whether there will be a follow up to the Shark Boy thing at the ppv, time will only tell.

WWE Smackdown

The Miz and Rey Mysterio really put on a show in the middle of the card. I enjoyed that match greatly and they booked it to make Miz seem a lot smarter than his "vulnerable" champion gimmick that he said the WWE was trying to push him. Mysterio is still very popular with the whole crowd, and despite losing, he came out on top, especially later on in the night.

I'm glad to see the WWE finishing the Edge and Kane angle, and hopefully their feud is done, because it has been terrible.

Best Match of the Week

The best match of this week was definitely Robbie E vs. Jay Lethal for the X-Division title. It wasn't a four star classic, but I think it had some good overall wrestling, a great superplex, and controlling cookie was rad. I think the feud could have a little more to it, but time will tell.

The rest of the week in wrestling wasn't that memorable to me, and while there was some solid wrestling, it's forgettable.

Old School Thoughts

For some reason, I was thinking about Kevin Sullivan. Remember him? I remember he had this awesome match at Bash at the Beach 1997 in which he fought Chris Benoit. Benoit and Him transformed real heat backstage into a great retirement match in which Kevin Sullivan truly left wrestling. It's one of my all time favorite matches, and props to Kevin Sullivan for staying away from the wrestling world after he lost the match.

Just look at the promo package between the two, holy crap...the two went fist to fist at one point at Nitro and one can only assume there was real anger for those strikes.

Wrestling Shop

For those of you that have extra change and would like to find something cool to buy that's wrestling related, consider purchasing The Rise and Fall of WCW on Dvd. It features a full documentary of WCW good and bad and some great matches from the WCW era past and present. It's an interesting one, and worth your time. You can buy it here.

Lastly, for those of you that are looking to get TLC on ppv this weekend, here is the latest updated card.

The Life and Times of Mr. Perfect DVD Out Now

Curt Hennig was just like his wrestling nickname, "perfect" in every aspect of his wrestling style. He got his start in a wrestling family with his father Larry the Axe Hennig, went through Verne Gagne s training camp, and gained experience in the AWA, reaching the pinnacle as the AWA Heavyweight Champion. But Curt Hennig s biggest spotlight would shine in WWE, when he became Mr. Perfect, a two-time Intercontinental Champion and 2007 inductee in the WWE Hall of Fame.

Ultimate Warrior vs Vince Mcmahon Plus ECW Announce Team Quits

Ultimate Warrior vs Vince McMahon

Wrestling news sites are discussing the possibility of having The Ultimate Warrior wrestle Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania 25!

Recently the Warrior has expressed interest on a radio interview that he would like to do something big for the 25th anniversary of Wrestlemania.

I don't know why though, considering the Ultimate Warrior wasn't even a major player in the wrestling game until the third Wrestlemania.

Let's just say that he does get his match with Vince, is Vince capable of having one more match? Can The Warrior even be trusted?

I'm not sure. The Warrior's wrestling dvd released through the WWE a few years back indicates that The Warrior is not to be trusted in the ring, and is not very professional, but Vince always says...never say never.

The ECW announce team apparently quit, or at least walked off the ECW set on Tuesday night.

Why would Tazz leave though?

Joey Styles replacement is horrible, gets bagged on by everyone, and is an all around idiot when compared to Joey...then again...Foley is the new announcer over at Smackdown...what will happen when Jim Ross Dies?

In my view, no one can replace Him...and well...we're going to have problems when he kicks the bucket.

Look for the ECW thing to be a work, as I doubt Vince and crew want to give up on ECW right now.

Interesting links:
The Hardy Boyz have a new 2 disc dvd set and it is out now, check out it here.

The HHH three disc set is out now too, with interviews and commentary by the game himself! Click here for more info on that release.

The Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin Dvd

Is this dvd worth it?

Haven’t we already seen Stone Cold dvd’s, vhs, and countless releases?

Yes, but this three disc dvd set is the most complete dvd on the Texas Rattlesnake known as Steve Austin that the WWE has produced. There are a lot of good points on this one and I recommend it highly.

This is not the complete and utter history of Stone Cold, but it is a good enough chunk of his days in WCW, WWE, and even ECW to hold over any diehard Stone Cold Fan.

Is it worth the price?

Yes.

However, if you’re like me, you’ve already seen all that Steve Austin has done. I do recall mentioning that I had 3,000 vhs tapes at one point. It’s all locked away in the memory bank.

My favorite match from Stone Cold is definitely Hart vs. Austin at the Survivor Series 96, which was a technical masterpiece.

If you don’t remember that one, it was where Stone Cold was antagonizing Hart for leaving after losing the title to Shawn Michaels. He antagonized him to the point that at the Series, Hart and Stone Cold would make history.

The feud wouldn’t end there, they battled it out all the way to Wrestlemania 13 where Hart turned Heel and Austin turned face.

Whatever the history is, this is a great set to pick up. Some people will complain about how it’s a little scarce on the WCW histories, but I think it’s worth it. Not everyone can have a massive VHS collection and not everyone really needs to see his feud with Dustin Rhodes or his involvement with some of the Heels in WCW.

Check out The Legacy of Stone Cold on Dvd, and order it from Amazon.com…or pick it up at your local store.

Randy Savage and Sting Dvd's Cancelled

Last night’s Raw was really good, surprisingly, the WWE is pushing the Hardy/Orton angle further than a lot of angles in the past. However, this is not to say that Hardy is not being set up for the ultimate fall as I said in the past.

Hardy is being set up for a fall. That’s what I’m saying, and haven’t heard anyone disagree, yet.

But more importantly the news that has come out yesterday is bigger than any one thing that happened on raw last night. The news coming out of the internet and wwe.com is that the Sting DVD and the Randy “Macho Man” Savage DVD have been cancelled. They were both suppose to see the light of day later this year in three disc sets featuring the best matches from their wcw and wwe/wwf careers (sting only wcw) and that was cancelled.

Speculations are running high as to why in the world this has gone down the way it has, but I think it has to be about a young Stephanie McMahon with an older Randy Savage!

Ok so it’s most likely not that, but it’s odd that Savage is the only one not in the hall of fame, or even thought of in regards to coming back. The only time he’s ever mentioned on wwe is during the promotions or flashbacks of wrestlemania III. Something is going awry and no one ever seems to have the full story.

So what’s up? Why is McMahon blocking Randy Savage?

He’s blocking Sting only because Sting is currently under contract with TNA and there might be some copyright issues with the name. But wouldn’t it help Sting to do business on a dvd? He’d be set for life with the sales of that thing.

Right now Sting vhs go for HUGE on ebay.

The Triumph and Tragedy of WCCW Dvd

I wasn't really looking to check this dvd out, but it is really one of the better wrestling dvd's that I've seen in a long time. I had the chance to check out a preview of this dvd and it sure was the real deal. It had some great matches, it had an amazing story, and the message is definitely clear, and I recommend this dvd above most of the other wwe dvd's that have come out lately. Pick up your copy of this awesome dvd here. It truly is a great one, and showcases some great wrestling action and the message is definitely great.

The Condemned Is out

The Condemned is out. That's right, the movie featuring one Stone Cold Steve Austin, who mops up.

The Condemned features Stone Cold in a starring role, and while the wrestling community enjoyed the cool movie, the critics weren't exactly thrilled. Not only that, no one went to see it. Seriously, not that many people ended up going to see the movie, and that's unfortunate. The movie isn't half bad, and Austin does a good job in a clever role that is like watching Battle ROyale, but not really with kids.

If you haven't checked it out, go and rent or buy it. WWE films is not doing so hot...but this one is way better than John Cena's movie.

McMahon Dvd Review

The WWE presents McMahon, a dvd about Vince McMahon, the owner of the World Wrestling Entertainment brand.

The dvd is presented in documentary style talking about McMahon’s childhood, and then progressing into how he got into the professional wrestling business.

This is not a top notch documentary, as it is very quick in overlaying the foundations of who the person really is and moves towards the more entertaining qualities that make professional wrestling tangible in today’s market.

From childhood to trying his hand at his father’s business, the documentary goes from one spectrum to the other meanwhile stopping along the way to interview wrestlers, family members and business partners about the man and the character that the home audience gets to see on television.

Mixed in with those interviews and the early onset of how the business took off, we get to see clips of WWE television that contrast the opinions of the wrestlers and McMahon himself.

The more entertaining moments in the film deal with Mr. McMahon’s home life, which is something that the average wrestling fan does not get to see everyday. So in regards to that, it is a very good dvd.

It doesn’t always portray Mr. McMahon in a positive life. It also talks about the other dealings that he’s had with the media, and failures like the XFL disaster.

Overall this dvd is meant for the WWE fans to get more of a picture of the owner and wrestler that they view on television. However, the casual fan can appreciate the whole thing as a great piece of entertainment, but may find it a little lengthy. It clocks in over 2 hours, but well worth it.

If you’re a fan, or just curious, this is a good starting point or carry over on Vince McMahon, and is a good dvd to watch, if you’re interested.
