TNA Turning Point 08 Results and Review

Here we go, my first TNA ppv in a LONG time! I was expecting a lot!

The intro to the ppv is just a recap of the last few weeks of TNA and mainly shows footage of the Main Event Mafia beating everyone up, mixed in with them talking about random crap. The show starts with JB in the back watching the arrival of the Main Event Mafia.

I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again, I hate the six sided ring. I wish that TNA would revert back to the 4 sided regular wrestling ring.

Eric Young defeated Consequences Creed, Sonjay “Guru” Dutt w/ So Cal Val, Big Petey Pump, Jimmy Rave, Volador, Doug Williams, Tanahashi, Homicide, and Jay “Black Machismo” Lethal

This huge match up was like a tag team match up with no one on any teams. They just featured all these guys waiting on the Apron and running in at random, and just wrestling. It was a weird gimmick, and it was just high spot fever. I liked the flow of this match, as it didn’t take much to watch this, and it was wildly popular with the fans who were into each major spot. So there’s no real psychology to this match up, it’s just random run ins and power moves to outside moves over the top rope, through the ropes and the likes. I liked it, and it was a good opening match, even if I didn’t really understand the point of jumbling all the x-division together. The winner gets a shot at the title and they reshuffle the ranks for the x-division. Doug Williams is an odd one in this match up, and reminded me of mid-90’s wwe tag team wrestling. I loved Volador in this match as he was not conforming to the TNA style but more over he was keeping his Lucha Libre style in tact and the TNA wrestlers were making adjustments to him, not the other way around. He was a highlight of this match up.

The weird thing about this match is that when someone would go for a pin, NO ONE would jump in to stop it. This didn’t make sense to me at all, and really took away from what could’ve been a really frenetic paced match up. Instead it just made me think that everyone knew the winner, and that my friends is NOT what I like about wrestling. I know they know, but they need to convince me that they don’t.

Volador was in this match for a good long time, and he put on a clinic of styles, he was amazing. This guy should be the x-division champion. He’s stellar, give that guy the belt, he is amazing! This match was elimination style, and the best elimination came from Doug Williams. He rolled up rave right into a release German suplex which was amazing! Kid’s got game, that’s for sure. The rest of the match was confusing to me, as people flying all over the place, and people looked legitimately hurt. Then there were a rapid fire amount of eliminations and after the dust settled it left Jay Lethal and Eric Young to determine the winner. These two really put on a show full of near falls and high risk maneuvers. Great back and forth action here and I was really into it for once in my life, and I couldn’t help but think about “Super Eric” but whatever, these two are great together. This match went through quite the moves and in the end Eric Young won the match up and becomes the number 1 contender to the x-division title. Overall a good match up, with a lot of great moments, and while I don’t usually like the TNA openers, this one was a good 20 minutes in length and really done well. Great opener for the ppv event, but I can’t help but wonder where the rest of the Prince Justice League is going within the ranks of TNA.

Roxxi & Taylor Wilde defeated Awesome Kong & Raisha Saeed

A nice paced women’s match up here, with Wilde and Roxxi taking control early on, but that was short lived. I’m completely thrilled that there are still people out there that give women these types of roles, because they are so much more than just “Barbie” dolls. If you allow women to wrestle they can put on matches just as good as any man. This match proved it yet again. Forget the wwe divas, they suck, these women are dropping elbows, executing picture perfect suplex’s and so much more! This match wasn’t a technical classic, but it was good. I love the TNA knockouts, they are so good, the best women’s wrestling you’re going to see, I guarantee it! Even if there were some stupid misses and obvious mistakes, I still went along with it. This match was good, and even after Taylor Wilde scored the pin on Raisha Saeed with a bridged suplex pin, this thing had me cheering; the knockouts are great wrestlers in their own right.

Rhino defeated Sheik Abdul Bashir

This is a waste of time for me. Why would the X-Division champion not defend his title on a ppv? I know this is a grudge match, but I never got behind it and I think it’s a stupid thing to waste this match up. The champion should defend the title whenever he’s wrestling on pay per view, rather than just wrestling with some grudge angle that no one cares about! Bashir was actually doing well in this match up, and Rhino didn’t look as intimidating as he usually does. The ref of course is that one dude that has been fighting bashir in times past. Rhino looked to be on the verge of victory but Bashir turned things around but it wasn’t until he pushed the ref that Rhino got the victory! Rhino gored Bashir, pinned him and walked out. That’s it. NO major altercations, no major post match celebration, it was just over. Done with.

Beer Money Inc defeated The Motor City Machine Guns

There was no way the Machine Guns were going to win this one, that’s what I thought at the beginning of this match up. Those two just seem to never get over that well. This was definitely the turning point for The Machine Guns as they have been trying to prove themselves for several weeks. This was a good back and forth match with The Machine Guns looking very good against the veteran tag team, and the crowd was behind them this time around. The action was solid, and both teams really worked well, and pushed as much out of each other as possible. There were some spots that didn’t make sense at all, and I’m not sure if they were just messing up, or they legitimately were too tired to execute the move. This match broke out into a melee later in the match up, and the ref wasn’t letting it go back to one on one action at all. Then Jacqueline jumped in, and interfered only to get slammed to the mat, and of course here came Beer Money with their usual antics, including beer in the face, and finally the pinfall win over the Machine guns to once again successfully defend their titles. A good match a terrible ending, but great match overall. I just didn’t like that stupid ending, no one ever gets a clean pinfall in tna, when a belt is on the line.

Booker T. defeated Christian Cage

I don’t see the purpose of a legends title, maybe a television title, but a legends title? No thanks. I like Booker T and all, but come on, this is a stupid way to put himself over. These two are on the top of their games, and it was nice to see a well rounded wrestling match up for a change. I personally thought that Booker looked really strong in the early moments of this match up. He was reversing all the offense that Christian was trying and was making everything look really good, I couldn’t believe how much Booker managed to get in without Christian coming back. Booker was looking, for once, as the better man. Christian got some great offense in towards the end, but it was Booker with a great roll up who succeeded in winning this match with minimal interference, and retains his belt! Not only that, Christian must now join the main event mafia! That’s right, Booker T wins!

Kurt Angle defeated Abyss in a Falls Count Anywhere Match

Kurt Angle seemed out of his element in this match up. So much so that he was completely dominating Kurt Angle for the most part of this match up. That is until things spilled outside of the ring, as this was a falls count anywhere match up. This wasn’t initially going well for Angle, and Abyss was really putting the boots to Angle, even in the crowd! But of course the Olympic Gold Medalist would come back. Impressively too, as Kurt Angle launched himself off the top of the stage and delivered one heck of a move on Abyss. Full front flip off the stage onto Abyss, that was insane! Seriously, Angle made a HUGE impact with this one move, but it wasn’t’ enough to put away Abyss, and the big man once again got control. The match kept going until Kurt Angle dropped Abyss onto a table from a platform and it was all over. Yep, that’s it, nothing crazy, just a small table bump and that’s it. Kurt Angle wins. Lame.

Kevin Nash defeated Samoa Joe

This match wasn’t so bad, I thought it was going to suck bad. But instead, this match up was quite good, and Samoa Joe carried more than his weight in this match up. Kevin Nash opened up a turnbuckle and most likely was looking to use it against Joe, later in the match up. Nash was never a technical giant at wrestling, but he could throwdown every now and again and in this match he really complimented Joe’s onslaught of attack! I actually was getting into this one, and I was surprised. Joe got busted open, and that wasn’t necessary, but Nash kept ramming his head into the exposed turnbuckle side of the ring. Joe looked really messed up. Nash dropped Joe on the back of his head with the jackknife power bomb for a very close 2 count, and then Joe locked on an arm lock but after a ref bump, Nash rolled up Samoa Joe and used the ropes for leverage and won this one. That’s right, Kevin Nash defeated Samoa Joe! That’s right, the Main Event Mafia was on a winning roll!

Sting defeated AJ Styles

The main event match was definitely interesting since the rest of the Main Event Mafia was on a great roll and if Sting lost, it would sour the evening for sure. AJ was the aggressor in this match up and Sting looked winded early on. I wasn’t sure if AJ was going to win this one as Sting was taking his time on the outside and taking breaks early on. Sting took the action onto the outside and was slowing the pace down completely and that was a dumb movie because this match didn’t start until around 7:35 pm and they were short on time, from my vantage point. Sting really kept things slow with a series of wear down holds including the Abdominal stretch, head locks, and other moves right out of the early 90’s wrestling scene. Aj took advantage of the match pace with some great suplex’s and running combinations, and the crowd was back into this one, until he missed a spear and Sting once again took control! Sting looked to have this sewn up when he went to the top rope, but Aj moved out of the way and started to lay into Sting with reckless abandon! Aj looked ready to win this one when Booker T and Kurt Angle came in and Sting rolled up Aj for the quick win! That’s right, Sting won this match with a roll up! I kid you not, what a piece of crap finish…a roll up!
