Over Analyzing Wrestling: The Mexican Wrestler

Super Crazy

Quite honestly, not since WCW brought in the high flying Mexican Luchadors to the main stream, the love affair between professional wrestling in America and the high flying Lucha Libre style has been quiet. I remember Lucha Libre’s brightest stars wrestling in WCW as far back as 1989 and the early 90’s in the light weight division as well as Konnan and Rey Mysterio Sr. wrestling in Starrcade.

The WWE flirted with lucha libre’s stars when they brought in several wrestlers to compete in 1997’s Royal Rumble and subsequently allowed many stars to wrestle in the light heavyweight division alongside many Japanese import wrestlers from Michinoku pro wrestling. Then it got quiet in the WWE. Even though mainstream players like Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero were now involved, they were never truly wrestling the lucha style in the WWF or WWE arenas.

Meanwhile, in WCW and ECW lucha libre was a celebrated form of wrestling and the Mexican stars were welcome parts of weekly programming and main event status here and there. Breakout stars like La Parka, Konnan, Rey Mysterio Jr, Silver King, Juventud Guerrera, Ultimo Dragon, Psychosis, and so many more wrestlers came through the WCW Nitro era of wrestling and broke the doors down for Mexico’s stars. ECW too had a lot of lucha talent on their side and sooner than later, WWE had to appreciate the stars and allow them to shine as well.

This didn’t happen until Rey Mysterio Jr. showed up in WWE with his mask back on! Mysterio lost that mask in a match against Kevin Nash, and I never approved, but who cares, right? Mysterio’s high flying offense was later canned for a more steady ground approach and now he’s a shell of his former WCW and Lucha Libre glory.

On the flipside the WWE once again flirted with Mexican stars when they brought in their Mexicools group. Among that group was Juventud Guerrera, Psychosis and Super Crazy! However, that short lived group was disbanded and Super Crazy was relegated to a jobber role in the new ECW that was formed shortly after the group disbanded.

Super Crazy has enjoyed continued money and jobber roles with very little in ring work and lots of losses. Well news broke out this morning that Super Crazy quits. He likes the paycheck but he never gets the push he wants and he is just being wasted.

Will he go to TNA? I hope not, they’ll waste his talent there too. What’s next for the guy? I don’t know.

Can Lucha exist in WWE or TNA? Yes and now. Yes it can exist but only if the bookers and agents allow them to do what they do and forget the consequences. Let them fly, let them wrestle, and don’t mess it up with stupid angles and story lines. Let them be who they are, the greatest pure athletes and idols of Mexico. WCW didn’t screw with the formula and we had amazing matches in the Cruiserweight division.

So with this news about Super Crazy, here’s some classic moments from Lucha Libre’s crossover into the main stream of sorts:

WCW Nitro 97' Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Psichosis

WCW Ultimo Dragon vs. Juventud Guerrera

ECW Tajiri vs. Super Crazy

WWE Smackdown 10/24/08 Review and Results

smackdown 10/24

The opening promo was of course Triple H, and he was eventually interrupted by Jeff Hardy & Kozlov but Triple H buries them by giving Hardy the pedigree and hitting the Motorhead music. Lame.

Maryse & Natalya defeated Michelle McCool & Maria

Why is it that the divas usually show up first on the card? I don’t know about you but I’m tired of the divas. I know I gave them a lot of credit when I saw them in person, but I’m just sick of these girls sad attempt at wrestling. Natalya and McCOol looked great in this match up, at least initially. Mid match out came a Mariachi, and it was Jesse & Festus, which was hilarious to look at. Meanwhile the wrestling match was inside, but Festus was trying to romance Maria. This allowed for Michelle McCool to get rolled up by Maryse and lose the match! Then the bell rang and Festus chased out the mariachi band. What a waste of wrestling time, what a horrible, horrible segment in professional wrestling.

Carlito & Primo defeated Bam Neely & Chavo Guerrero

I never in a million years believed that Chavo and Bam had a change in hell to win this match. In fact, I just knew it wasn’t going to happen. Not only that, Carlito’s new wrestling gear is lame. The whole “brothers” angle is so stupid, considering Primo came out talking about how he wasn’t anything like his brother and that he wasn’t going to wrestle with him. A few weeks later, he we are getting both Colon brothers as a tag team, who of course will get separated down the line and one will go solo (ala the Hart Foundation). This match started out fast, The Colon’s tagging in and out fast, getting the better of Chavo Guerrero, but eventually Chavo took a breather and tagged in Bam. Bam Neely sucks, and starts arguing with Chavo. This causes a distraction and Carlito hits the backstabber for the win. The more important story here is that Chavo & Bam look to be on the outs. The Colon Brothers win again, and of course they would, did anyone doubt this? Horrible match if you ask me. It was watchable, but just barely.

Kizarny sucks! The promo sucks, and I hope that character gets buried immediately!

R. Truth & Kung Fu Naki defeated MVP & Shelton Benjamin

Kung Fu Naki started this match up against MVP and MVP looked really weak against the #1 smackdown announcer. MVP immediately tagged Shelton Benjamin, and things started to heat up. Kung Fu Naki wins this match up, and finally gets a push in WWE? I guess so! This match was not that great all, but it was worth watching. It was ok, but nothing special at all. A nice throwaway tag team match.

I hated The Great Khali kiss cam, and it’s just a waste of time to have such a monster wrestler, only come out for comedic value. This is lame, and I wanted to go to sleep. I did think that the letter from “Bruce” was hilarious!
Once again, I want to to take time out to say that I hate the new Kizarny gimmick and think this is a horrible idea for the WWE to do. Trust me, this can’t be good.

The Brian Kendrick defeated Super Crazy

Another predictable match if you ask me. Super Crazy opened the match like a bat out of hell, he was laying out Kendrick with everything he had in his move set. Seriously, Kendrick was taking a whole lot of punishment in the onset of this match up.However, when the Ref was looking at Super Crazy, The Kendrick gave Super Crazy a back heel kick over the ref’s back, then delivered The Kendrick for the easy win. Weird, fast match up but once again Kendrick wins. Ezekiel dropped crazy with “the Rock bottom” after the match.

Triple H vs. The Undertaker No Contest

Here we go folks, a rematch of the epic battle of Wrestlemania XVII is live on Smackdown, but of course it won’t live up to that huge Wrestlemania moment. The entrances alone took at least 20 minutes to get through. I had a strange feeling early on that this match wasn’t going to end well for either wrestler, but could the WWE pull a fast one on me? Word on the street is that these two wrestlers DO NOT like each other backstage, could they coexist for a worthwhile match on television? I had to ask myself that question when things went down.

Initially, Triple H had this match sewn up. He was landing a lot of stiff right hands onto Undertaker in the corner, all until the ref stepped in for a moment, allowing Undertaker to grab Triple H by the throat and then throwing him into the corner for the control of the match. This of course led into a rest hold, as is the norm for the main event veterans, they get tired quickly folks, pay no mind. The match moved into another Triple H “weakness hunting” match where he tried to find a limb to focus on. This is what Bret Hart used to do in his matches, and then lock in the sharpshooter for the win. The best moment of this match definitely had to be the double clothesline as these two made it look perfect! This double clothesline was as good as the big double clothesline from Wrestlemania VI between Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior! It didn’t get the two main event stars down as they both started to go back and forth, Triple H didn’t sell much to Taker’s snake eyes, and Taker didn’t sell the Harley Race high knee either. These two exchanged moves back and forth, but the Game was definitely the predator in this one. Everytime we were going to see a big move by either opponent, the other would counter. I’m not sure if these two were just not willing to put the other over, but it seemed that no one could get a real good move in. I thought this was going to end early, but then Triple H landed a middle rope suplex on taker and things were looking good for The Game. Triple H threw Taker over the top rope and the two started to battle on the outside. Taker got the best of the exchange and had Triple H ready to take The Last Ride, however Triple H reversed it into a neck breaker, for the two count! I was actually starting to enjoy Taker vs. Triple H for free on Smackdown! Triple H got a two count with a spinebuster, and this might have been the best match on Smackdown in a long time. Triple H had huge right hands going on Taker, and Taker got enough where with all to drop Triple H with The Last Ride, but didn’t capitalize! I was cheering for Taker, but out came The Big Show to interrupt this match up, and really screw up a ppv quality match up. Well, maybe quite not that good, but a decent one for television. Big Show took a chair shot from Triple H, then delivered a chokeslam to the champion. He followed that up by hitting Taker with a chair, and laying out the dead man completely. Both competitors were knocked out, there was no major ending, a dq finish, and this was lame. The crowd booed the crap out of Big Show.

Post match, after the commercial break, Kozlov came out and beat down a seemingly helpless Triple H. Finally, someone beat Triple H already, he's holding the roster down!

WWE Smackdown 10/24/08 Results

Maryse & Natalya defeated Michelle McCool & Maria
Carlito & Primo defeated Bam Neely & Chavo Guerrero
R. Truth & Kung Fu Naki defeated MVP & Shelton Benjamin
The Brian Kendrick defeated Super Crazy
Triple H vs. The Undertaker No Contest

This edition of Smackdown was actually going good. I really liked the last match, however I didn't like how it ended. I thought have Big Show interrupt this match up was stupid. I wanted to see a real winner, but alas, WWE screws us out of a real ending again. 2 hours, roughly 5 matches, and a lot of wrestlers left out of the show. Great...Just great.

WWE Smackdown Results 9/5/08 and Review

WWE Smackdown rolls through town, just a few days before Unforgiven and we get immediately treated to the Undertaker and Vickie saga, and who knows how it is going to turn out! This looks awesome, the WWE editors are amazing, and they do such great things with these promos, when they are on, they are on, sometimes they aren’t as good, but this opening was cool. Undertaker is looking scarier than ever, that’s for sure.

Triple H promo:

Triple H comes out to cut a promo only to get interrupted by the participants in the championship scramble. Nothing too great here, except for the closing portions. The Brian Kendrick ambushed Triple H and then knocked him down when Ezekiel distracted him, then came in the rest of the heels, only to get thwarted by Jeff Hardy. Hardy started beating everyone down, then Ezekiel once again was the equalizer, only to get Triple H coming back with a chair and clearing the ring. Great set up for the scramble, and The Brian Kendrick looked great in this one, and if he wins, I’ll be happy. He won’t, but I want him to win.

R. Truth defeated Bam

R. Truth did his usual stuff, and was impressive. However, Bam is nothing more than a glorified jobber and is probably one of the worst bodyguards in WWE history. He loses this match and Chavo doesn’t even get involved to help out. Truth wins this one easily. Some might find that Truth’s move set is generic and is what he’s always been doing, but I beg to differ, it’s fresh and hopefully he gets some better opponents, or else things are going to be bad for Truth’s future in the WWE. He’s still new, so maybe he’ll just get through some squashes.

The Undertaker Segment:

The Undertaker cuts a promo promising that he is going to send Vickie Guerrero straight to hell. Quite honestly, I don’t really give a crap about this. Undertaker winning the world championship would be an amazing thing, but since things are not looking like they are headed towards Triple H vs. Undertaker anytime soon, we might have to wait for a while. Undertaker than disappears and we’re left with an empty ring.

Shelton Benjamin defeated MVP

This seemed to be set up recently thanks to Shelton Benjamin dropping MVP on Smackdown. This match was looking good to start off, and MVP really took advantage of Shelton’s naïve behavior by pretending that he quit and was walking away. This was short lived though as MVP soon found himself fighting off the U.S Champion through various steps of the gold standard’s move set. However, right when I thought Benjamin was going to win, MVP nailed him with a drive by kick and I switched my opinion, thinking that MVP could get the upper hand. A near fall later and out of nowhere, Shelton Benjamin threw up the Pay Dirt and BOOOM MVP loses to the U.S Champion clean.

Divas Backstage segment:

I have no idea what these chicks were talking about. I was bored. I thought Maria was stupid? Now she’s acting all smart. I don’t like either one of these divas. I think it was Maryse and Maria? I don’t know, it was boring, I didn’t pay much attention to this.

Maryse defeated Maria

This match, although well executed somewhat well, is a horrible example of what women can do in professional wrestling. The women seem to be forcing themselves to perform certain moves, and they don’t look like they know what they are doing at all. If you like staring at skinny chicks trying to wrestle, then you probably enjoyed this match. There was a lot of clotheslines and attempted moves off the top rope. The execution at times was just completely horrible, and I couldn’t wait for this match to be over. Maryse dropped Maria on her head with a ddt, and the crowd was completely dead. This match sucked, and the divas division in the WWE makes me hate Smackdown.

The Brian Kendrick defeated Jeff Hardy

The new guy and the old guy, and Hardy looked to be favoring his knee yet again. I’m not sure if this was a work or if Hardy was legitimately injured. Kendrick had this match sewn up, but one quick mistake and Hardy took advantage creating a huge gap between the beginning of the match and the center-piece. Hardy did put on a show, putting on some moves that he hasn’t done before, and I think Kendrick is amazing in the ring. He looked as though he was not going to pull off the win, but with a little help from Ezekiel, The Kendrick defeated Jeff hardy after landing “The Kendrick” finishing maneuver. The Kendrick is by far the highlight of the Smackdown roster right now, and he does in fact remind me of a young Brian Pillman, and that’s a great thing.

Super Crazy defeated Ryan Braddock

Super Crazy won a squash match. There wasn’t a whole lot to mention about this, all that I know is that Braddock never stood a chance. Crazy is entertaining, but this match was nothing short of a lame squash match.

Post Match we get Kozlov coming out and asking for competition. He gets The Big Show coming out to the ring smiling, and he’s going to be the competition! They were about to brawl and right before they got into it, Vickie Guerrero comes out and stops the action.

Vickie threatens the Big Show and tells him to go home.

Vickie then says that she’s going to force Undertaker to apologize to her.

Brie Bella defeated Victoria

Another Squash match. Nothing major happened here, I was bored.

Triple H defeated The Great Khali

I didn’t think there were nearly enough lumberjacks, but I understood what the match was going for. The match overall wasn’t half bad, but once again I couldn’t help but root for Khali. I’m tired of seeing Triple H winning all the time, and once again he wins this match up against Khali without much of a recourse. The standard match was seen here, as Triple H has become comfortable in his move set and Khali hasn’t changed up anything since he showed up in the WWE a few years back. Triple H wins this one, but the winner really is none other than Hard, who stood over the champion and had the last say in this match up. Not half bad.

WWE Smackdown 9/5/08 Results

R-Truth defeated Bam Neely
United States Champion Shelton Benjamin defeated MVP (Non-title)
Maryse defeated Maria
The Brian Kendrick defeated Jeff Hardy
Super Crazy defeated Ryan Braddock
Brie Bella defeated Victoria
WWE Champion Triple H defeated The Great Khali (Non-title Lumberjack Match)

This edition of Smackdown was really well done. There was a lot of wrestling on this show, and if you’re a fan of WWE you more than likely enjoyed Kendrick and the main event. MVP’s match was good too, and even R-Truth wasn’t half bad. This whole even was good, and dare I say it was the best thing that happened this week in professional wrestling.

Dead Diva, Dead Mexican,Dead Sandman,Dead Raw

As my title suggests, I found some major dead spots on raw last night. I couldn't believe it, but some of the best action and best moments were received with little to no fan reaction.

First and foremost, Super Crazy got worked by Kennedy. That reverse Suplex was insane. Super Crazy is just that, and Kennedy proves he's a master technician by not hurting the other guy in this very dangerous move.

The Divas match was highlighted by a sick move by Melina. A guillotine like leg drop from a standing position into the splits into a cover! I was impressed by that one, but the match was a little stiff for my tastes. But that wasn't the major thing I noticed, the main focus for me was when the Women's Champion Candice Michelle came out, the crowd was dead. Maybe one or two claps, mainly from Jerry Lawler. Why would the WWE put in a diva that no one likes? Heck, Melina gets more attention and she's not even a Face! WWE needs to get the belt onto a diva that gets crowd reaction as a champion. Candice can't even wrestle! I think the divas look good at times, but can't wrestle. Well, Victoria can, and I'd love to get some Victoria lovin...but I'm a fat mexican in Seattle and well...I hear she doesn't like fat mexican stalkers, so I stay away.

Cody Rhodes had the most impressive altitude in his Missile Dropkick, that even my wife noticed that he wasn't the average wrestler. First off, he's not built like a truck, he's not 7 feet tall, and yet he's allowed to perform such a "high risk" maneuver. Amazing! This photo tells it all, and wow, I was so impressed that I was actually cheering for the guy. Randy Orton ruined it for me, but it was nice to see a change of pace for a change. I hope Dusty Rhodes knocks the snot out of Orton at the Bash. If Dusty goes down, I'm going to be very upset.

In another post where I say someone is too old. (except Flair) The Sandman is Old. Too Old! Look how he flails around like a drunk....nevermind. Carlito seemed to be taking some liberties, and some of the shots and moves seemed very forced and shoot style. Sandman was really getting a beating, then Regal came in and showed he still had fight left in him because he was unloading on Sandman as if he just insulted his mother! Hacksaw Jim Duggan saves the day with his 2 x 4 which is probably going to prompt a match at the Great American Bash. I told my wife that I thought the match should be a 2 x 4 & Kendo Stick on a pole match. Or a sticks vs. brass knuckles match up. Carlito could spit apples, Regal could knock someone out, the kendo stick and 2 x 4 could be weapons, and it would probably be more extreme than tuesday nights.

Face vs. Face time again, and John Cena is going to get my vote of confidence. However, I could see that being derailed by a DQ finish setting up Summerslam's no dq, fatal fourway, or some gimmick match to end the summer. We'll have to wait and see.

A dead crowd...raw wasn't too great, but had some nice spots. I enjoyed it.

Bring On The Mexican, Super Crazy To Return

Super Crazy has not been seen or heard from lately, and that's because he's recovering from a Knee Injury. However, do you remember what feuds he was in before leaving? Yep. He was battling it out with Chris Masters, and a few matches with Carlito, and some other jobbers. Wait he is the Jobber!

Why does WWE toy with our emotions? Super Crazy doesn't need to say a whole lot backstage, and he can take a similar role to Dean Malenko in WCW. In WCW Dean said very few things. He just went out there and performed, wrestled, and wrestled and showed 2000+ wrestling moves to the astonishment of all comers. When he held the belt, he would defend it on a weekly and monthly basis!

So why can Super Crazy get involved with the Cruiserweight division, or the tag division?

Oh right...

The WWE doesn't like the Lucha Libre influenced wrestling style that Super Crazy & guys like Mistico bring to the table.

Super Crazy is set to return to Raw soon, and probably won't last long. I think he's on par with Val Venis & Steven Richards at this point...just hopeless jobbers to whatever monster heel they are going to push this week.

I hope they prove me wrong though.
