ECW on Sci Fi 4/14/09 Review

John Morrison defeated Evan Bourne

The night opened up interestingly with Morrison fighting Evan Bourne. Evan is ok, but he’s starting to just be a one trick pony. An exciting one at that, but you need something more than just that. In this match you saw how small Evan Bourne really is, as he was dwarved by Morrison in this match up. Overall this match up wasn’t half bad, and things really got interesting when Morrison hit Evan in the face with a knee so hard that it nearly knocked out Bourne. It was the main replay in this match up, it seriously looked like it hurt. Morrison is surprisingly fast at times, countering Evan Bourne in various stages of this match, including running back and forth into the ring. I was actually surprised how much time this match was given. It really showed that either ECW didn’t have much planned, or there wasn’t too many people left on the roster to fill the hour. This match was back and forth, with a lot of different moves and counters, but I couldn’t help but notice that there was no clear cut psychology to the steps, it was just counter to move to power move to rest hold. While this is fine in many cases, it just seems a little odd to give a match so much time but not have that storytelling that someone like Bret Hart would give to this length of time. A highlight was definitely seeing Evan Bourne get hit with the Moonlight Drive from the corner ring post, as Evan Bourne was setting up for his Shooting Star Press. Evan couldn’t get up from that, and this match was said to be a match of the year candidate by Matt Stryker. It was definitely the best Non-PPV match I’ve seen in a long time, that’s for sure.

Vladimir Kozlov defeated David Something (Jobber)

I hate jobber matches. This was a jobber match. The other guy didn’t even look like he could wrestle at all. It looks like they found a random idiot in the crowd and let him in the ring. It was messed up, but I guess that’s just a throwback to the 80’s.

Finlay defeated Christian and Tommy Dreamer

Finlay won. I had an emergency and missed this match.
