WWE Monday Night Raw 4/20/09 Review

The show opened up with Chris Jericho addressing the crowd, talking about how he is finally leaving and he is done with Raw and he hates it there. This prompted Ricky Steamboat to come down to ringside. Steamboat says thank you to Y2J, in a weird segment. This was a weird start to Raw. John Cena came out to ring side at this point. After more ranting, Cena makes sure to tell Chris Jericho that he’s going to have to wrestle Cena tonight.

Batista defeated Chavo Guerrero

Chavo was fed to the lions again. This match was just Batista hitting the Batista bomb then pinning Chavo. That was it, there was nothing else to it. They squashed Chavo yet again. Chavo got on the mic after the match and he claimed he wasn’t ready, so Batista came back to ringside and delivered yet another Batista bomb. Chavo should quit at this point, he’s just getting jobbed out every time he wrestles.

CM Punk defeated Kane

Kane was getting hit with a lot of offense from Punk. Punk kept working over Kane, but it seemed like it wasn’t enough. Kane started to dominate, and started to throw his weight around, but it was to no avail. Kane went for a chokeslam but Punk countered, rolled up the big red machine and won this match in a blink of an eye. Overall not the greatest match in the world, but not the worst. I didn’t really think it was all that good, but it was Raw, so I just went for it anyways.

Santino came out to ringside. He asked for Santina to come out to ringside! The titan tron showed a pre-recorded video of Santina telling the audience that he is in Italy and that she can’t kiss Khali. This was a weird program, and as things progressed, the prerecorded video sped up. This segment was tanking, and then we were greeted with Beth Phoenix coming down to ringside.

Melina defeated Beth Phoenix in a women’s title match

This match was standard divas match. It was really too short to develop anything interesting. Melina rolled up Beth Phoenix after a nice sunset flip, and won this match easily. I’m not sure why these matches are so slow to build, but it happens. Melina retains easily.

John Cena defeated Chris Jericho via Disqualification after Edge interfered

Would the WWE let the heavyweight champion get beat by someone changing brands? I thought about that as Chris Jericho was dominant early on against John Cena. The crowd was chanting Y2J early on, but there were definitely some John Cena fans out there, splitting the crowd quite nicely. Cena hit his four move set up and was going for the Attitude Adjustment, but was countered by a sly Chris Jericho. Jericho seemed to have this match lost with Cena nearly getting the STFU, then into a reversal small package, but Cena power lifted Jericho! It was time for the Attitude Adjustment but for the first time, a creative counter had Jericho flipping nearly to his feet, then out of nowhere landing the Code Breaker! I was marking out huge, and if you saw this, you were too, I’ve never seen such a creative counter to the Attitude Adjustment! Jericho couldn’t keep Cena down, and after Cena kicked out of that finisher, he finally hit the Attitude Adjustment, but couldn’t pin Jericho! This match started to heat up, and a frustrated Cena went to the top rope to deliver his leg drop, but was countered into The Walls of Jericho! The 1992 Survivor Series finish between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels came to mind in this part, and Cena was dead center in the ring in the Walls of Jericho! It wasn’t to be, Cena rolled out of it, then put on the STF! That wasn’t enough, as Jericho got to the ropes. At this point I actually liked this match better than the other matches that these guys have had, but then EDGE came out and interfered, and that was the end of the match. They ruined such a great match up. Edge attacked Cena, most likely giving Jericho a loss in the record books, but believe me when I tell you that this match had an amazing amount of counters and entertainment before the stupid ending.

Post match, Edge hit Cena with a Concierto, and then got on the mic and counted to 10, claiming that he’s already knocked out John Cena. Cena didn’t answer the 10 count and Edge was getting the biggest cheers for a heel in a long time.

The Big Show defeated Rey Mysterio Jr (non title)

The Big show mishandled Rey Mysterio, and just won the match. Mysterio had no major offense in this match. Way to squash the Intercontinental champion, huh? Oh well, Mysterio gets squashed, Show just looks like a douche.

Randy Orton defeated Triple H in a NO Dq match

These two guys really tried to make this worthwhile. They used the steel steps, fought outside, and just made it look like a ppv caliber match up. That being said, it had the speed of a ppv match up, with both wrestlers methodically moving from point to point, and resting for random moments throughout the match, setting up the next big spot. The match got good when Orton got thrown into a trash can with a Spinebuster. Priceless came down and started fighting Triple H, then came down Shane Mcmahon to help him out. He was getting worked, then was thrown out of the ring. The Orton team was fighting off priceless with ease, and in the melee knocked out Shane McMahon with a spear. The ring was eventually cleared, and out of the blue Randy Orton hit the RKO and won the match! That’s right, Randy Orton defeated Triple H via pinfall!

  1. I was so pissed off at the end of that Jericho-Cena match... they totally wrecked it. I was marking out huge too, and I should have known better with a PPV this weekend... they aren't going to have anything definitive in a great matchup before a PPV.

  2. Yeah, they pretty much had no choice but to go that route with Cena/Jericho. Edge couldn't have interfered while the ref was distracted to give Jericho a win since HHH/Orton had a similar finish. Cena obviously wasn't losing clean and Jericho losing wouldn't have helped either of them. Still a great match and made both guys look like a million bucks.

  3. hey I think chavo is a jobber to the star's remeber he got a clean pinfall over MVP a while back, same with shelton, actually it was before NWO

  4. Yeah, you're right man, there was no way to make both guys look strong if one won via pinfall.

However, if Edge caused Cena to lose to Jericho via distraction or interference it wouldn't look half bad.

Oh and Chavo is the jobber to the stars. I guess it's a far cry from wen Eddie was helping him out, that's for sure.

  5. I had a thought... double countout.

  6. Yeah a double countout might have worked. Or someone came in to feud with Jericho. Steamboat coming down to fight Jericho. I don't know.
