WWE Monday Night Raw 6/1/09 Review

The show opened up with a cage and Legacy with Randy Orton inside. Orton is looking older, as the camera spins a close up, he says that this Sunday he’s going to defend his title in a cage. Oddly enough he didn’t first say that he’s going to win. Oh yeah, they fired Kennedy, cause of t his idiot, but that’s just news. I need a news guy, too bad I can’t afford one. In the ring Orton flips a coin to see who Batista must face tonight I a steel cage match! Cody Rhodes will face Batista in a steel cage match tonight! This is a scary moment, cause Rhodes got on the mic! Hilarious! He can’t talk and he doesn’t have the charisma of his father, where’s Goldust? Get him back to the glory of his debut. Remember when Goldust fought Piper at Wrestlemania 12? Because Razor Ramone got suspended? That was good.

Ric Flair came prancing out to confront Randy Orton and I couldn’t help but remember when Flair got his head slammed in between the cage door at Fall Brawl 97 when him and the horseman were suppose to beat the NOW, but Curt Hennig turned on him, remember? Yeah, well Flair said he was going to call out Orton every week. Flair, retired, asked for Orton to fight him in the parking lot later tonight, we’ll see how that pans out.

Batista defeated Cody Rhodes in a Steel Cage Match

The first match was a complete mishap for Rhodes. Batista annihilated Rhodes and as Randy Orton came down to see his new protégé in action, Batista bombed Rhodes nearly through the mat, and it was all over in under 10 minutes. This was a boring cage match to me, but you gotta admit, Batista shouldn’t have a hard time against Rhodes, but on the flip side, isn’t WWE supposed to build new characters? How does Cody Rhodes get over if he’s always jobbing out to the monster Faces?

Beth Phoenix and Maryse defeated Kelly Kelly and Mickie James

This match wasn’t horrendous, but it wasn’t necessarily that great either. There were a few moments, but the best set was towards the end when Rosa distracted Kelly Kelly allowing Maryse to hit a nice ddt and get the win. Mickie James had a few high spots, but nothing that I would write too much about. This match seemed obvious and no diva really had a chance to show off her stuff, so I guess that’s that.

The Colons defeated William Regal and Matt Hardy

Remember when Regal got a comeback and he won the King of The Ring last year? Yeah no one else does…oh wait, the announce team remembers. I hate mashed up teams like Regal and Hardy, and it’s hilarious to me that the WWE would try to get the Colons on the show with such a stupid match, then again, maybe this will set up a Hardy and Regal match up? I don’t know. The Colons look amazing out there as usual, they are right on and direct with every move and combination. I just hope that they don’t split them up and feud against each other like the ill fated Hardy feud that seemed to be lackluster.

Chavo Guerrero and John Cena defeated The Big Show and The Miz

Standard tag match where Cena is made to look unstoppable against odds against him; he basically gets beat up for a good portion of the match, then he comes back only to realize that a blind tag has been made, making the Heels look like they are smarter, and of course they are, then comes the swerve. Show for instance, knocked out The Miz and cena tagged Guerrero and pinned The Miz winning the match up.

Oh but that’s not all, Big Show and Cena have to brawl to set up their match this Sunday and it’s not looking good at all. Although, Cena jumped off the top rope and landed into Big Show’s right hand, he then was put into a sick looking Camel Clutch! I was cheering harder for Big Show than when Big Boss Man dragged his father’s casket away in a graveyard segment from his stupid title reign, when everyone was injured and he was headlining boring ppv’s. So Cena was left out cold, Big Show looked good, Guerrero and Miz were out cold too, and that was that.

Kofi Kingston defeated MVP for the U.S Championship

This was an interesting match up, because for intents and purposes these two wrestlers are faces, right? I’m not sure who had the upper hand going into this match, but one might argue that MVP has a little more experience so he’s got the upper hand, but Kofi was putting some great mat work in, instead of just flying off the ropes and doing the high spot thing. After the commercial, MVP hit a sweet Superplex from the top rope! “Shades of Bret Hart” with the execution of this amazing move. In a shocker, at least to me, Kofi Kingston barely edged out a victory with a nice roll through reversal, from shoulders to cradle to reversal, and Kofi pulls a win and the U.S Championship! Now do you think he can hold onto it? We’ll see…MVP loses the title in a nice face vs face match, I liked it, you might have liked it too.

Vickie Guerrero defeated Santino

Santino was facing Vickie Guerrero in a slop match? I didn’t know where this was going and then out came Hardy and Regal to mop up, Santino then threw slop over everyone, hitting Regal in the face with it! After a few moments for laughter and shock, Regal and Hardy put the boots to Santino, and of course Vickie Guerrero wins this match. Nice, way to bury Santino, the best new WWE superstar in recent memory…sure he can’t wrestle that well, but he moves merch and puts butts in the seat. Whatever…Vickie wins, that’s that.

Ric Flair fought Randy Orton in the parking lot

In a non-match of sorts, Flair fought Randy Orton in a street fight in the parking lot area. He had the upper hand for a few moments, throwing Orton into gates and doors, but Orton turned things around and threw Flair through some boxes. However, Flair made it interesting, and Orton was taking some serious damage, which was actually nice to see for a change. In fact, I was almost marking out huge cause this was reminiscent to the classic Hardcore title matches that we used to get in 1998 – 1999 when the 24-7 rule was in effect. Flair was busted open the hard way, and it was obvious that Orton was going for that. Flair and Orton fought back to the main building and were fighting on the announce table! Flair slapped on a figure four on Orton on top of the Announcers table! Then out came Legacy to beat up Flair and I was wondering why they didn’t show up sooner? At this point I wondered if this was setting up Batista somehow, and of course you knew it was as the crowd was calling for him. Legacy was kicking the crap out of flair and at this point he was inside the ring! Orton commanded Legacy to lock the cage doors for protection and the beat down of retired Flair continued!

Batista ran down to make the save however, the steel cage door was locked, and Batista couldn’t get in…so it seemed. Batista was starting to climb the cage doors as Randy hit a sick RKO on a seemingly dead Ric Flair and this was getting out of hand, for wrestling’s sake that is.

  1. I thought the MVP/Kingston match was the best one of the night (and that has nothing to do with my MVP fandom... all the near falls at the end put it over for me).
